I just got back from the gym and despite sticking to my scheduled workouts and staying within the calorie count for the week, I only lost 1 lb. I've had a week of disappointing news and I've read that stress alone can make you gain weight, perhaps that's why I didn't hit my mark.

However, I just noticed from my food journal that this exact week last month I only lost 1 lb. Hmmm...every other week I've lost 2-5 lbs with the same schedule. The beginning of the month has been the best time for me to lose.

Regardless, I'm not going to let it put me off track, better to be more determined instead of discouraged. After all, I have lost 27 lbs in 11 weeks. I should focus on the positive.

Congratulations! That is a major accomplishment! I know how much hard work and discipline that took! I am calling my goals my health and fitness goals, as it really isn't about the numbers or the weight. It is about making sure I don't add my name to my family's history of stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. The benefit of feeling good about myself, feeling in control once again, can also not be underestimated. It seems that many of our Live Journal friends are also taking a serious look at the subject.

Call it whatever you want; it works for you.

Having been trained as an undergrad in behavioural psychology and as the current treasurer of or Gay men's chorus, I find the numbers comforting. It's measurable and verifiable. I find that charting the results also acts as a motivator to stay on track, as well as letting me know when I've "strayed".

Since the majority of the LJ people I keep in touch with are Bears, or Bear-ish, it's not surprising that many of them are taking a second and third look at health issues. Heart attack, stroke, adult-onset diabetes and high blood pressure stalk all of us mature, big guys.
