I just got back from the gym and despite sticking to my scheduled workouts and staying within the calorie count for the week, I only lost 1 lb. I've had a week of disappointing news and I've read that stress alone can make you gain weight, perhaps that's why I didn't hit my mark.

However, I just noticed from my food journal that this exact week last month I only lost 1 lb. Hmmm...every other week I've lost 2-5 lbs with the same schedule. The beginning of the month has been the best time for me to lose.

Regardless, I'm not going to let it put me off track, better to be more determined instead of discouraged. After all, I have lost 27 lbs in 11 weeks. I should focus on the positive.

27 pounds in 11 weeks?? DAMN, child, I'm impressed!

Everyone hits plateaus in their weight-loss regime, no matter how closely one adheres to the plan. This is perfectly normal. The fact that you've lost a pound is encouraging; the fact that you haven't GAINED any weight is even more important.

You're doing well.

I'm interested in your progress you far. At what weight did you start, where are you now, and what is your target weight? (Not to deny you your progress, but the pic attached to your LJ entry looks pretty good!)

A fellow combatant,
Bruin

Weight Loss

I joined a gym in December and didn't grace the place till mid-February:) When I finally got through the door, I met with two fitness trainers. Before getting on the scale, I asked them how much they thought I weighed. Both said about 220. I weighed in at 257 which is by far the most I've ever weighed. I am good at disguising my weight, am tall and also have a large frame, so to my friends I didn't look much different than I normally do. However, this was unacceptable to me personally and professionally.

I am counting calories, food-journaling and exercising three times a week, once a week with a trainer. Next week is my last with the trainer, but it was important to me to make this commitment of funds and time. I needed to make it financially detrimental if I didn't follow through. I'm now down 27 lbs...down to the weight I've been lying about on my resume for 5 years:) I have 23 lbs to go to my target weight of 207.

I've never lied about my weight (Well, not over 10 lbs worth), but since I'm only 5'8" and not large-framed, I can't hide much. A year ago, I was 258 lbs. Using an Herbalife product, called Total Control, sublimenting my diet with SlimFast shakes, and limiting myself to one "real" meal a day, I'm down to 227, which is lighter than I've been for over a decade, and exceeds my original target by nearly 10 lbs.

Congratulations! That is a major accomplishment! I know how much hard work and discipline that took! I am calling my goals my health and fitness goals, as it really isn't about the numbers or the weight. It is about making sure I don't add my name to my family's history of stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. The benefit of feeling good about myself, feeling in control once again, can also not be underestimated. It seems that many of our Live Journal friends are also taking a serious look at the subject.

Call it whatever you want; it works for you.

Having been trained as an undergrad in behavioural psychology and as the current treasurer of or Gay men's chorus, I find the numbers comforting. It's measurable and verifiable. I find that charting the results also acts as a motivator to stay on track, as well as letting me know when I've "strayed".

Since the majority of the LJ people I keep in touch with are Bears, or Bear-ish, it's not surprising that many of them are taking a second and third look at health issues. Heart attack, stroke, adult-onset diabetes and high blood pressure stalk all of us mature, big guys.

I've noticed that you were looking more twinkish :)

Keep up the good work and I'll stop finding all the pounds you're losing.

Twinkish? :)
