I always feel like baseball's All Star Break starts 6 weeks of unrelenting Summer. Compared to the rest of the country, we get off easy - not as hot, not as long but still. I hate it. The sun hurts my eyes and I hate the heat. BUT six (probably more like 8 with global warming) will be gone, soon. I'm counting on it.

And I have shades and air conditioning. So really it's just 8 weeks of not pleasant that really does not get in my way much.

Yesterday was the last of baseball until Friday. I'm thinking of buying a month of Mariners streaming to try it out. Maybe. The radio broadcasters have gotten as bad as the TV but at least I'd have something to watch when I hit mute. It's $25 a month and I can do only one month easily.

But, meanwhile this week I'll be watching other stuff.

This afternoon is aqua yoga. I might go out and do some puzzling this morning. But really it looks like it's going to be a nice, quiet day.

I have not had or used a windows computer in a long long time. I held on to the last one because I needed it to print out sewing patterns (PDF patterns use layers and web acrobat would not print layers). So when I quit making clothes, I gave up the computer.

But, now, after all these years, I need a windows computer again. I want to remove the Digital Rights Management from a couple of Audible books so that I can play them without Audible. Just in case. I don't really intend to give up my Audible account but if something happened to it... There really is no easy way to do it without Windows. Oh well.

And showcasing the less then fantastic clothes and hair of the 80s,
Comes the fantastic voice of Patti LaBelle singing about her new attitude...

Reading Brit mysteries all the time means I don't always get the references. I'd never had a Jaffa Cake before but had been offered them in a few drawing rooms while investigating my murders.

I'm watching Alcaraz and Sinner walk out to the courts ready to play.  Last time they played, in Paris, it was a five set battle more like a boxing match than tennis.  I would expect today to be no different.  It is so nice to watch, from the comfort of my home, a match of tennis on a par with any I've ever watched.  As always, I've got Mom on my shoulder saying 'I wish John [Mcenroe] would shut up'.  He still hasn't and won't.  The reason I'd love to have a button to push that would silence the commentary but not the crowd and pop of the rackets.

I expect Alcaraz to win but both are so deserving that it would not matter.

In the family tradition I'm collecting Amazon returnables.  I've got two.  One is a monitor connection adapter I no longer need since I broke the damn monitor and the other is a backup set of what was supposed to be bone conduction earphones but is actually over the ear speakers, not what I want and not what was on the site.  I'll also be returning the Chromebox I have once I've gotten the new one with more oomph.  I've done my bit to keep them profitable, though.  Shoes, another headset, a monitor, a Chromebox and all kinds of 'stuff' critical to my existence.  I'll probably take the returnables with me tomorrow to Georgetown.  There's a UPS there that has an independent set up where you grab a bag, Scan your code, print off the label to seal the bag with and drop it in the hole.  It is a great set up that is as efficient as it can be.  Rather than separate packages it all goes into large boxes for the return.

Today is a rain-ish day.  We now get flood watches all over Alexa and Google if the humidity is even high.  It does not apply to us.  I'd rather have a heat gage warning that I could set for my specific age and such.  If only we had Artifician Intelligence to help with that kind of thing.

I get annoyed frequently that AI is not incorporated into daily existence.  I'm sitting at a red light with traffic backing up behind and traffic backing up on the other side and no one crossing with the green light and it is such an obvious opportunity to use AI.  There are cameras that can see what it happening and even a low level computer system would be able to change the light based on reality.  Can't figure out what that doesn't happen.

First world.

I started a new book last night. An random shot from the library. I had read other stuff by the author years ago but don't remember a thing. This book, however - at least the first 40 minutes - is captivating because of the narrator. I mean she just got right into my brain like she was sitting next to me telling me about the most amazing thing that had ever happened to her. It was wild. Even if the rest of the book sucks, I'm so delighted for that first part. I hated to go to sleep. How It Happened by Michael Koryta. Read by Christine Lakin.

Oh the other big news from yesterday was brought to you by Ingrid. My neighbor who is just whacked and not in a good way. As we began elbow coffee, Bonny reminded Ingrid that she still needed the $15 for the 3rd floor gathering next week. It was due 2 weeks ago and everyone has paid but her. She then proceeded to have a melt down/tantrum that would have honestly made a 3 year old proud. She ended up literally pounding on the table. It was pretty funny. Then everyone pretended it had not happened for about 30 minutes and this pissed her off so when we started passing around the snacks, she got up and marched through the gathering and left, muttering very loudly and venomously "I've lost my appetite due to Bonny."

I was delighted because the last time she had a tablet pounded tantrum it was due to me. (I had not checked in on her when an alarm went off.)

She is such a piece of work.

I pulled out another sweater from my stash and unraveled the sleeves for more hair. It was a sweater for about a 3 year old. Here is one sleeve and the hair already gotten from the other one. I'm guessing the one sleeve is hair for probably 7 or 8 dolls. And I still have the whole rest of the sweater. And one other one (pink). That should be enough to get me to the end of August when they start putting out the sweaters again in the charity shops.

And Dick and I worked on the puzzle. We've gotten a lot done but 1. Not all of it is correct. It's one of those where the same piece will feel like it fits and look like it fits but turns out to belong elsewhere. and 2. We still have grass and sky to do and I'm not sure how in the heck those will get done give #1.

My Costco membership expired in February. Two of the items I normally buy when they go on sale are now on sale (coffee and AREDs2) but, actually, I don't really need either one right now or soon ish so I was going to go reup this week and buy them but I think I'll let it slide some more. If I were going to go this week, it would be this morning. Sunday's first thing is THE only time according to me, but, not today, Costco.

Today will be some knitting. Some baseball. Some TV. Some puzzling. And whatever else happens.

It might be sleep neck or sleep+tech neck but ouch! I was not as careful yesterday and today it's a problem. Plus we cut volleyball short since we didn't have enough people and then two of those had to leave early. So, today, I have to really watch it or I'll cripple myself.

I also have a zit just inside my nose and a sore spot on my thumb - right in a critical knitting spot. Oh woe is me.

Many members of the cleaning and maintenance staff here are Spanish speaking. Some have some English but most all use phone translators when the going gets rough. Timber Ridge is, after, apparently a large number of requests, is offering a short course in conversational Spanish. They've lined up a local Spanish teacher (like, very local - lives in the neighborhood) and they have put out a flyer to see how many are actually interested. I'm waffling. My main reason for not doing it is that I'm lazy but also the classes will be at 4 in the afternoon twice a week. My brain quits working after 3. Sometimes 2. Plus, I am horrible at languages. I had years of French in school and I can barely tell you where the pen of my aunt is. I know if I sign up, I'll hate it on the day I have to go.

But I do love that Timber Ridge is offering it.

Time to get dressed for Elbow Coffee.

my formerly empty freezer

As I written about here about a million times, the food scheme at the cult involves my getting an allowance of $600 on the 10th of every month. It does not roll over. So I have to eat $600 worth a month or lose it.

This is designed to be more or less one meal a day. Breakfast is $15 Lunch is $16 and Dinner ranges from $16 to $28. Once in a blue moon I have one of their lunches and one of their dinners (like today, probably) but more often, I skip entirely. This is mostly because their portions are generous and I have so many leftovers.

I have, in past months, trended towards skipping early on and then madly trying to cash in later. But, now I have a new plan. I'm going to strike when the iron is hot. Next week's menus do not look enticing. This week's teriyaki is still great so today I placed 6 orders. I ate one and put 5 in the freezer.

So now I have $502 and 26* days to eat it. So my spreadsheet says I have to eat more than $19 every day. See the problem!? It's so not easy living in the lap of luxury. *They serve brunch on Sunday but I never eat it.

The dinner buffet looks good tonight so that will help.

Also I went to Safeway and got ice cream and some other frozen stuff. So now my freezer is packed to the gills. Which is perfectly fine.

Here comes the sun

It's actually already here. To stay. Oh well, everyone else will enjoy it. And I have shades and air conditioning.

I made a concerted effort yesterday to keep my head up and my posture good and shockingly, I think it worked. My neck and shoulders feel very much better. And I slept soundly - my bed app, Fitbit and me - we all agree. I used Prime Day to get a new pillow and I think it's a winner.

I can never use my cellphone in dreams. Sometimes I can't find it. Last night I had two cellphones and they were both very old technology and I couldn't find the info I was looking for. I couldn't text or call. Happens a lot in my dreams.

Today is a trip to UPS and then a stop at Safeway. And probably a load of laundry. It's also new menu day, which is always exciting. I want to get the errands out of the way early before the hot really kicks in.

But, I should get dressed first.

A Day In The Life.....

It always comes back to bite me in the ass...

I've had it with my fellow aides at work and decided to "work" just has hard as they do.
So last night I was told, by the two aides working the evening shift, the empty patient rooms were set up and ready.
Charge nurse told me we would be getting a patient at some point during the night, so I went to check on the room that it was going into.
BIG F'ING SURPRISE to room was not set and ready for a patient.
So I got it all ready for the admission.
In the process of quality checking the glucometers in all the rooms, I saw that the other empty rooms weren't ready for admits either.
I made the comment to a couple of nurses that wasn't going to fix any of the other empty rooms unless we were going to get admissions because I am tired of picking up after everybody else.
Flashforward to the end of the shift and manager comes up to me and tells me she wants to see me in her office after I punch out.
I go to her office and she proceeds to tell me, paraphrasing, how lousy of a employee I was.
She said nurses complained that I wasn't doing my job and being lazy about things. And tonight wasn't the first complaints she has gotten.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will put my work ethic up against any aide on our station.
But when I take a stand I am the one that gets in trouble for it.
I finally ended the "conversation" by telling her, I guess I will be a good little aide do my work, and in my head, I will do everybody else's work too.
If she wants a cold worker drone, I will give her a cold worker drone.
They are making really easy to say I F'ing Quit.
If I didn't need the healthcare coverage, I would be really tempted.

On another note, my car went into the shop this morning to be repaird.
They say it will be at least 10 days, which means at least two weeks because the shop is not opened on Sat or Sun.
They gave me a lift over to Enterprise Rental, the company State Farm uses.
Signed all the paper work and they gave me a Chevy Equinox.

Myrna was my puzzle buddy. If the puzzle was too hard, she's busy herself organizing the pieces by color and/or by shape. She was always on the project. Bonny does some puzzle and more lately, I think to fill in.

BUT, Myrna's good friend, Dick (of Dick and Jan who moved into Myrna's apartment) LOVES puzzles!!! More than Myrna. More than me! He also suffers from One More Piece-itis. They came back from their doctor's appointment and Jan went in to pack and Dick said "I'll be in after I find a piece or two."

I have a new puzzle buddy.

Tech neck - I haz it

Phone, tablets, laptops, knitting... my neck and shoulders are killing me. Probably the only thing saving me is volleyball, where my head is aimed upward for 2 solid hours 3 times a week. But, that's not enough. I need to concentrate on posture and my neck.

But, speaking of laptops. A while back, I spent a whole $30 on an Android tablet that was on sale. It was a generic one that has good specs but it's really a $30 piece of shit. Then Amazon cut off Google from their software. Google apps won't install on Fire tablets and Fire tablets won't install anything Google. I have one good but really ancient Lenovo tablet and I wanted to make sure it has an in house backup so I've been waiting for Prime Days for a decent price. I bought an 8 inch because they don't make 7 inchers any more. It was $60 and arrived yesterday. Especially after fucking with/fighting the $30 noname one, the Fire tablet is really excellent. It's fast and sharp with great graphics. I got it loaded up with everything I wanted and am delighted. It's very weird not to have Chrome but it's doable. I mostly use it for games and videos anyway.

It's another wonderful cloudy day. The last one for a while I think. It would be a perfect day to go out - make my latest Amazon return and stop in at Safeway. I might. I might not.

My car is getting near it's annual checkup time. I got a text from the repair place this morning. But, I think I'll wait until the 'repair time' light comes on. Or at least not get all fretty about it until then. It's so easy to do here in Issaquah that it's also easy to not do.

The young ladies

Two things cut deep into me over the past day or two.

Initially is a story told first hand by one of the Mystic camp counsellors (the counsellors are 18 and younger) that they wrote their names on their own bodies and then wrote the children's names on their bodies..  That particular insight into the desperation got to me when the rest is just noise.  That they would even think of doing that is amazing but that they were so sure that it would be needed speaks volumes that the pictures and all the rest somehow don't do for me.

And then, unfortunately, I read some of what Abbot said while kissing Turmp's ass as he always does, as everyone eventually seems to do.  He managed to offend me for some reason by referring to the children who were writing their names on their bodies as 'the young ladies'.  [Gov. Greg Abbott said Trump "cares a lot about those young ladies"]  Like they were at a cotillion and dressed in gowns.  It is my prejudice, I think, but the unconscious gender specific pushing them into their boxes even in the middle of all this solidified, once again, how far apart I am from the majority of the environment in which I live.

yep, it's the job

During our daily stand-up meeting online yesterday, before the meeting got started, our newest addition (still in training) to the team mentioned closing their eyes after work "for just a few seconds" then suddenly it was a few hours later. And they still had no problem getting back to sleep on schedule later.

Some voice (I'm not sure who) in the meeting responded with those 5 magic words that I keep using too. "This job is a lot."

It's not just me being old or inflexible. It's definitely the job that's stressful and tiring.

Cloudy morning

It's rare to get a cloudy morning this time of year so I'm wallowing in this one. I can have the shades up and watch the world go by or watch my little tiny bit of it anyway.

Night before last, I slept like crap. I made up for it last night. When I woke up this morning, most of my quilt was just as it was when I crawled in. I not only slept but, apparently, didn't move.

Today I have nothing on the agenda at all. Nothing. Which is luxurious.

I had to call Key Bank today. The aim of their 800 number is to ensure no one ever ever ever calls it twice. They are, I'm sure, extremely successful. I know I won't be doing that again. I have a CD which matures in two weeks. I got a notice telling me to call with instructions unless I wanted it to roll over. I do not. So I called. I had to enter the last four of my social. Then I had to enter my 10 digit account number (which took me 3 tries) then I got a woman who wanted to know my name and what I wanted. She put me on hold twice. The hold music is volume 25 and includes a chipper voice telling me shit I do not care one single bit about. I got it twice. Then she transferred me to some dude who had the same chipper voice and I had to go through the whole thing again - name, what I wanted. Then he, in 3 paragraphs of words that were not at all needed and included his personal vacation plans(????), told me I had to call back after the maturation date. Yeah, no.

Key Bank is my backup bank. They have two physical branches here and have actual money at the branches. I figure some day that might come in handy so I keep the account open. When the CD matures, I will go into one of those branches and close the CD and find out exactly how much they want on deposit to starve off account fees and then move the rest to my main account at BECU which also has a branch here in town but that branch has no $.

I've made all my Amazon Prime Day purchases except 1 and I'm still thinking about it. No more shopping needed. And I'm caught up on returns.

The Phillies play at noon and I'm having chicken teriyaki for lunch again.

I might cut my hair this morning. Or at least take a little off the top.

Life is better with two monitors

Jul. 8th, 2025 01:03 pm

Rplacing the PC has been a bit of a bother.  I bought the wrong one.  Once upon a time Chrome OS would easily run on a Celeron with 4GB of RAM but no longer.   Small cars get bigger.  Thin operating systems get fatter.

I did some more research and have ordered a beefier CPU and 8GB RAM so I should be in better shape when that comes in.

In addition to the computer problem I destroyed a monitor hooking it up.  My best monitor.  I cracked the LCD.  Fortunately my computer friend had a bunch of monitors and gave me two matching ones that are not as good as what I had but have the advantage of actually working.  While doing this I bought an adapter (Display port to HDMI) and, of course, bought the opposite male/female combo from what I needed.  So I bought a new one and returned it.  Second one I got wasn't even close to the right thing, not what was on the site.  So I ordered number 3 and returned number 2.  The third one was right but I figured out that I had actually not needed one at all but could dailsy chain the monitors and needed only one port on the computer in the first place.  It is why there is only one display port on the computer.

So I'm returning number three too.

These adapters are not available IRL at Walmart or Best buy so Amazon is pretty much the only choice.  So nice their returns are way more than reasonable.

It's going to be another week since the new computer is not in stock and won't be here for a bit but I think I've got my computer things under control or at least in sight of under control.

Now to decide what to do with the printer situation.
