mrdreamjeans: At concert in Sugar Land, TX, January 2017 (At Kristin Chenoweth)
I'm not a huge fan of movies; but I often gather a lot of information about them. Usually, I'm familiar with the general plot of the film, who the cast is and how the movies were received. However, going to the movies, watching them alone is the one event I don't enjoy doing alone. Eating alone? I read a book; going to a stage piece alone? A piece of cake. The Oscars were held March 27th. I had only seen three movies all of last year (Encanto, Cruella and Luca) and they were via streaming, so I wasn't invested in this year's Academy Awards.

Let me preface by saying, I miss Joan Rivers. Her annual bitchy-queen critiques of the fashion at the Oscars was my favorite thing to watch.

I was fine with the actors who won the acting awards this year; I applaud CODA's win as Best Film. It was touching to see the audience sign their applause. I'm sure it made them feel "with it" and good about themselves. Much has been made of Lady Gaga protecting a frail Liza Minelli and Gaga deserves the kudos.

I understand Will Smith's bitch slap of Chris Rock, but obviously don't condone such measures (I think Chris' joke was weak and meanspirited ...) But, Chris has been ragging on Jada Pinket Smith for years ... one too many cheapshots at her expense, me thinks ... Moving on ...

The Telecast was by far too politically correct. Please bring back Billy Crystal as host ... or for that matter, bring back Bob Hope from the dead.

A DJ for the Oscars? Ridiculous. I understood about using the Gospel Choir to celebrate the "In Memorium" segment. However, all of the dancing around by choir members distracted from the dead folks being remembered. (Good idea ... poor execution. Couldn't see the photos and names.) Jamie Lee Curtis holding a puppy while remembering Betty White ... good idea ...

I was curious about Beyonce's overproduced video. I fell asleep after the intro. Was she too scared to perform it live? At this point, does she believe she actually is a queen?

I didn't listen to any acceptance speeches other than the eloquent one made by Adriana DuBose for West Side Story. Adriana did well (though her outfit didn't do her any favors). There were several examples of oddly shaped necklines. I simply wasn't interested in speeches after Will Smith's slap heard round the world left a foul odor over the proceedings ... Will, you sabotaged the crowning moment of your professional life. Shame!

Now, to the important part of the Oscars: the dresses! In general, I found most of the gowns to be in poor taste, ill-suited to the beautful women wearing them. The stylists for the stars must have been on drugs. It's hard to make Nicole Kidman look bad, but a grey dress that emphasized your breast bone left most of us wondering why you are so painfully thin.  As
thespian15 said in his post on the topic, there were so many boobs on display, he was tempted to suckle. That does say a lot coming from a gay man; but, I agree. The Williams Sisters dresses were garish and unappealing.  In fact, there were only a handful of dresses that I liked ... Here are my choices based on elegance, well-styled and classy. There was little class exhibited during the 2022 Academy Awards.

Lily James                                                                Sophia Vagara

Jessica Chastain in her Oscar dress and after-party gown - two winning looks!

For me, these were the clear fashion winners! Since no one asked, my picks and pokes for your perusal. Convince me, I'm wrong. :)
