In honor of my friend David's birthday, I tried the Jell-O Cake recipe that I posted yesterday. The verdict is in; the cake came out of the oven 30 minutes ago perfectly shaped, moist and delicious.

A bonus is that our home currently smells like Raspberry Jell-O being made. The only drawback to the experiment, other than I should always stay out of the kitchen as I have no business baking sweets I should avoid eating (no control), is that since I used Sugar-free Raspberry Jell-O in the recipe, the cake is bright pink-red in color! A bit disconcerting.

Our dilemma is - since we've already eaten a couple of slices of the cake (I told you it was moist and really good warm) do we frost it or not? What is proper frosting etiquette? Can a partially-eaten cake still deserve frosting? Inquiring minds want to know:)

GotMoof suggests Cool Whip. Any comments?

COOL WHIP??? Bite your tongue!!

It's butter creme or nothing!

However, in the case of some cakes, frosting (after the fact or no) is purely optional.

Call me a nit-picking snob (Since I AM one, what can it hurt?), but frosting the cake AFTER you've had a few slices just strikes me as wrong. Use this cake as your Test Case, adjust the recipe to suit (if nothing else, to adjust the color) and frost your next one. You may discover that the frosting is not needed at all.

This time around, enjoy your nekkid cake.

Ah, your will power got the best of you eh? Shame, shame. :-P

If anything, since the cake may be a bit more on the sweet side than usual, I'd suggest a frosting that's not too rich, a cream cheese frosting is indeed deliscious, or perhaps some perhaps a milk chocolate frosting is in order.

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] bruinwi that Cool Whip is outsville.

Now, you'll have a pretty white-haired Mrs. Santa type chasing you too! Sears!?!?!? Bite your tongue! My mother shops at J.C. Pennys....LOL!

She was very funny trying the cake last night. She said this is really good, but then added with a sniff, next time you should make it from scratch using the family Sour Cream Cake recipe instead of a mix! :)

ps... Hope your ankle heals.....hehehe!

OR...

Or you could cut the cake up and individually frost each piece. Maybe even try a bunch of different frostings... though my preference would be Cool Whip if you're only going to choose one, because Cool Whip has that added presentation quality about it, where you could put down an un frosted piece of cake down and put a plop of it on top, and still look "classy". Though you did get this recipe out of a redneck cook book... hmm?

A simple vanilla glaze poured over the reamining cake would work. Isn't it in a Bundt or Angel Food Cake pan?

Indeed!

It was made in an Angel Food Cake Pan:) I think the recipe called for a tube pan; I figured if we didn't have one of those, we could always use a bed pan instead....LOL.... Just kidding!

Cake lovers everywhere will wince, but I took my version of your glaze suggestion to heart tonight. I poured Hershey's chocolate syrup over my piece of cake.

The combination of raspberry and chocolate was quite tasty.... and sinful. Yum! LOL!

I love those cakes, my recipe book that I found them in calls them "Poke Cakes" and the book does call for frosting it with cool whip.

Jell-O, Hello!

Thanks for responding to the tongue-in-cheek frosting debate. I was in a bit of a funk when I got up this morning, but that has lifted due to the practical, but fun responses that awaited me. Just proves on Live Journal, you won't get much response to political rants, but a good cake recipe will take stage every time. Hugs to all!

Glad we were all able to cheer you up my dear. Jokes and all. :-)

My Mom has shopped at both Sears and Penny's and still does on occasion - Also, Norstrom, the Bon, now Bon Macy's and such. :-P

Yeah, well, she's probably doing better than my Mom as I don't think she owns any stock at all.
