Institutional M&Ms
May. 29th, 2004 07:43 amGreetings from Mitchell, SD! Tim and I are about 350 miles from his home in La Crosse, WI and I will be glad to settle for a couple of days. To date, we have driven 4100 miles since we left for San Francisco on May 18.
Despite having to leave Tim's mattress and box springs and curbing his computer desk, we got an amazing amount of stuff in the back of my truck. The drive to Seattle was easy; we got to see beautiful scenery, stayed both ways at the Ashland, Oregon La Quinta and arrived back in Seattle for part 2 of the trip on Monday evening.
The title of my blog comes from a comment Tim made at a Sizzler buffet. He made me laugh, so I've decided to use the phrase when I want to talk about random events. He had an ice cream sundae with M&Ms on it; however, they didn't have the letters on them as usual. He said they were probably made this way for institutional use. The idea of institutional M&Ms just makes me chuckle:)
The pack-up in Seattle was tough. Bad weather and much rearranging. Tim and I both wound up shipping about 7 boxes a piece via UPS and the post office. Mostly books, though I had to send a bunch of clothes home. One box weighed 95 lbs. We got out of Seattle late, once I walked the apartment with my manager and said my goodbyes. Tim and I made it to Couer d'Alene, Idaho the first night. The problems with the UHaul had already begun due to sloppy work by the guy who hooked me up in West Seattle. One odd sight - a sign in Spokane, WA for AAA Storage, Motel and Campground. LOL!
Day two of this segment of the journey was all about the B's:) Butte, Bozeman and Billings, Montana. Tim and I drove through astounding scenery, but the drive demanded full attention...steep inclines and no easy stretches. My truck did well, pulling the heavily-loaded trailer with little effort through the 6393 ft Continental Divide Summit. Along the way we saw a Buffalo herd and another strange pairing. The Billings, Montana Welcome Center is right next to the Montana Womens Prison. I guess it spurs the economy.
We overnighted in Sheridan, WY at a Holiday Inn. The remainder of Wyoming was a dull drive except for many sightings of wildlife; so was the drive through South Dakota till we reached the Missouri River. I had more problems with the UHaul which culminated in a severed electrical cable. I spent the remainder of the day dealing with UHaul's emergency services, driving the last 65 miles of the day with emergency lights on and Tim following me in a severe thunderstorm. Thank Goodness, he had my back! I am very happy that we are sharing the adventure.
The UHaul was repaired this morning and we are about to head out to Tim's house in Wisconsin, completing the second leg of the Great Move. I'm sure there will be more institutional M&Ms along the way.
