This an interesting final weekend in San Francisco. Last night was dancer Tony Falcon's final performance in "Evita". Tony begins rehearsals next week for the Broadway-bound musical "Mambo Kings". We had a put-in rehearsal for Matthew Sipress this afternoon and he made his debut this evening in Tony's spot. Matthew had semi-retired from dancing when he got the call for this gig; he was on the 1998-99 National Tour and also did the show with me in 2000 in Houston in a regional production. He's a wonderful talent.

Today's put-in was also for Barry Brown who replaces Kevin Burroughs. Kevin's last show is tomorrow afternoon and Barry debuts tomorrow night. Just enough time to complete alterations on the costumes. Handsome Barry's a Texan from the Amarillo area and will soon be seen in the movie version of "The Producers". When we are off next week, and for most of the run in Ft Myers, Florida, Barry will be in New York working on the film. Good for him!

Keep your fingers crossed that Angela DiCicco stays healthy this weekend. She'll be playing Eva the final four shows. She was also on tonight. Kathy Voytko who plays Eva Peron injured her neck last night during the performance (pulled muscle, I believe) and she's out for the remainder of our time here. Kate Manning, the other cover for Eva, and who normally plays The Mistress has been told to go on vocal rest for a couple of days. Our capable swing, Eileen Kaden (who is also Bradley Dean/Che's real-life wife) will be covering parts of Angela, Kate's and Brianna Yacavone's shows for the rest of the weekend. (Brianna is on for The Mistress.)

It's just part of life in a touring company, but it does make the shows an adventure.... Go Angie!

Looks like I'll miss you all around until mid-June. We'll be in Richmond, Norfolk and Philly in successive weeks. I'm home this coming week, then in Ft Myers for a week and then the long run in Toronto...six weeks. I think we should speak more often:) Hugs!

As you can see from the line up, it's been an interesting weekend. For the first show today, we also had the Magaldi out of the line up. Seems he didn't cook his chicken thoroughly that he ate after the show late last night and got a bit of salmonella. So with Eva, the Mistress and Magaldi all out, that neccessitated five different changes in the show.

Tonight Barry made his debut and he's totally new to "Evita". Matthew and he started rehearsals on Tuesday morning. So after a total of four days, they learned the show, and were thrown on never having worn costumes or mics, nor ever having been on stage with the sets and lights. They did fine, but it's a bit of challenge, as you can imagine to fold them into the show with so many people out ill or injured:)... And... we were nearly sold out in a big theater....

It's always fun to read of the changes within the cast and the flexibility of everyone when someone is sick or pulls a muscle etc.

In some ways, one can learn something from the stories you are sharing here of touring and how to get along in order for a show to work.

Take care and may we read another entry soon. :-)

Neil,
I heard from my other half that he saw you at C&B. I did enjoy the show a lot and got quite a kick from going backstage. Your visit to the Bay Area has brightened quite a few lives :-).
By the way, my lack of posting on LJ is well known as well as my laziness in responding to email. Plus I usually feel I don't have anything to share in a public forum (call it shy). I did try to send you email but found that you didn't have an LJ email connection. Maybe I'll run into you before you leave.

Bert! That's interesting as I receive emails of comments all the time. I'll have to check out why you couldn't get through.

It was nice to meet you and to share a bit of time. Tho I only know him through running into him at C&B, Steve seems to a great guy. Nice to know you two share a life together!

No need to be shy with me. You should know that from dinner and post-show:) Keep in touch!

had fun

I hope you had fun here in San Fran. It was nice to see you and see the show. I heard "Mambo Kings" will play here first as a test run. I hope you have fun with the rest of the tour and do not forget the nights that the lights went out in San Fran. :P

My understanding is that "Mambo Kings" moves into the Golden Gate Theater for a try-out next month. The month here was pretty intense given the show schedule, the extra rehearsals to put new people in the show and the additional work to put on the benefit. It's been immensely rewarding, but limited the time I could spend with friends to occasional pre-show dinners and lunches. For instance, I only got to see my ex David and his partner Stan one time because of our schedules and they are two of my closest friends. I guess I'll just have to come back when I can gad about:) It was great meeting you!

So Tony Falcon just finished a run at the Golden Gate and, in just over a month, will wind up back there again. How too funny!

Tomorrow at 10am is the cast/crew meet & greet - I'm looking foward to it all over again."Mambo Kings" will surely prove to be a spectacular production, at least visually.

Of course, I loved Kathy and Kate in their respective roles. But since I have seen the show twice already, it will be interesting to see the show this Sunday with the new performers. I am sure it will be as wonderful as ever. The benefit made me realize what a talented cast you have. Its great to have such talent to call on when the unexpected happens.

I think there will be a full cast this afternoon, except for Kathy. It is sort of like being on a successful sports team. Depth really counts when you're six months into the tour.

Are you...?

Are you guys on the road now, Neil? Feel stupid even asking this question! Cuz if you're not posting, you may be on the road? :0)
Have a good trip to next destination! Hometown HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGS!!!

I"ve been on the road since last October, except for a week off here and there. We closed in SF last Sunday and I flew back to Texas on Monday (It took all day:). I fly out again this coming Monday to Ft Myers, FL for a week-long run and then to Toronto for 6 weeks, so forth and so on..... Thanks for asking!

You in Houston?

Are you in Houston right now? If there's an opportunity, love to have lunch with you.
I'm in NYC next week.
Sorry, I thought the troupe moves on from one destination directly to the next.
It's good there are breaks in between :)
