Culmination

It's been quite a weekend. The schedule has been packed with extra rehearsals and visits with friends, but so rewarding. Several planning efforts are coming to culmination this evening with our "One Night Only" Benefit at Club Fugazi.
Tim's (gotmoof) brief return to the Bay Area required some scheduling flexibility on both of our parts. With all of the extra benefit rehearsals, my show schedule and previously planned activities, we had to do some creative thinking to find a bit of time to catch up. Tim and his host Gregg ( a terrific guy) picked me up at my hotel Friday morning, took me to a pharmacy to pick my medications for my ear problem; Gregg dropped us off at a shuttered MacAdam, though we were able to get in because Tim's former manager Chris was in the building; Gregg returned an hour later and the three of us had lunch in North Beach before I headed to a four-hour benefit rehearsal. Thanks to Gregg for his thoughtfulness.
On Saturday between shows, I dined with Paul (excessor) and Curtis (drscott) and enjoyed myself immensely. I love hanging out with these guys. The conversation is always filled with laughter, wit and warmth. I'm really happy that they've come together and that they so obviously delight in each other. After they attended the Saturday evening performance, which Curtis and I started planning six weeks ago, they came back stage with me. As I've said previously, nothing brings me more joy than my friends getting a close-up glimpse of what I love to do. I appreciate it, guys, that you took time out from the merging of households to spend time with me!
The loss of an hour's sleep due to "Spring Forward" made the rehearsal for "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" before the Sunday matinee, a really early call; but the benefit is tonight and it was necessary. It's difficult to put together a seven-person number with choreography and close harmonies, but I believe we're going to pull it off.
After Sunday's show, Tim and I rendezvoused in the Castro. It was the only time during his visit that I had a block of free time, and I'm happy that Tim was able to spend the evening with me. I was briefly given the opportunity to meet peppabear (Tom) and his partner Steve and a friend of theirs nicknamed Rhino. I'm a fan of Tom's photography on live journal and it was a pleasure to meet them. Tim and I tried several times to get hold of our dear friend BearBrat (Tom) to join us in the evening's activities, but couldn't reach him. Tom, we missed your presence.
Since Tim and I now have years of history and a family connection, we had lots to talk about. We had a simple dinner at Lori's Diner on Powell where conversation was easy and low key. I finally bought my iPod, the 30GB Photo version. I had been saving every Christmas and birthday gift of money and finally had enough to purchase it. (I had been pestering Tim with so many questions, that I finally decided that I would wait till he was in town and could go with me. Of course, I have no way to put any music on it, but I've got it:)
We returned to my apartment for a few minutes, so that I wasn't carrying the iPod all evening, and then headed out to the Metreon to see "Robots". I wasn't sure I was going to like the movie at first, but it picked up toward the middle when voice talents Robin Williams, Jennifer Coolidge and Mel Brooks lifted the familiar story. There were a lot of topical and cultural references to catch amid lots of giggles. The score was a big plus. Tim and I agreed that we liked it. Afterward, Tim headed back to Noe Valley and I walked my tired butt back up Powell to Pine.
Starting at 1pm today, we have a four-hour tech rehearsal for tonight's cabaret. It benefits the Richmond/Ermitt (sp?) AIDS Foundation and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. It is our only chance to get everything into place before we perform it for the audience. The line up has changed constantly in the past few days, as people dropped out due to illness or fatigue or opted in to help out a fellow performer. In addition to our cast, Carole Cook and Sharon McKnight are part of the festivities. Jeffrey Drew, one of our dancers who volunteered to direct it, has been flexible, patient and kind. I think it will all come together. I know I look forward to seeing and hearing my fellow cast members sing and dance all kinds of music other than "Evita":)
The third week of four here in San Francisco is over and I've seen so many live journal friends, but it makes me sad that show obligations have limited the time I've been able to see folks. I've read about the Aries birthday party, Garyaoke and sports events and think "Damn, that sounds like fun!" :) You guys should count your blessings that you have so many opportunities to come together and enrich each other's lives in a variety of ways. It's what community is all about!
