This has been a very special first week in the Bay Area for me. You’ve seen many of the posts of the live journalers who attended “Evita”s first performances. Their support was hugely appreciated by myself and my fellow cast mates and I hope that the personal back stage tours gave everyone a sense of what it takes to put on a successful performance of a musical.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words and compliments. You can’t imagine how much it boosts you when you are away from home for months at a time to be greeted by friendly faces after a show. It just adds to the happiness I feel at being able to do for a living what I love to do the most.

I’ve already posted the names of the live journalers and their friends who attended the first performance on Tuesday. I should mention in my journal that Josh (enhydrasf) and Ed (castrowoof) saw the Wednesday matinee with Angela DiCicco and Tony Falcon on tab as Eva and Che. (Guys, I had copies of the picture we took back stage made to give to you when I see you next.) In attendance on Wednesday evening, were sflonestar and his friend Joe, backawayslowly, abearius, doubleohsteven and fuzzgruff. Jim, Joe, Dave, Jeff, Steven and Gary, I think we made a hirsutely handsome group!

On Thursday night, handlebear and nanocub were down front, and toward the back were bearbrat’s friends Janet and Alyx. I went out for a brief time after the show to The Lonestar with Cameron and Scott where we met up with pyrogeoff and doubleohsteven. The charmer glovercom introduced himself to me, reminding me that we had chatted somewhere on the internet before. I appreciated that!

On Wednesday between the two shows, we vocally rehearsed the opening number for our benefit on April 4 at Club Fugazi. It was specially written for us by Seth Rudesky and it’s a parody called, “What’s New San Francisco?” It’s pretty funny. Between shows on Saturday, we are staging the number at a dance studio on Mission.

Kathy, who is suffering from a sinus infection was out again on Friday night and Angela was on once again as Eva. Angela does a fine job, so it was disconcerting to hear the audience rumblings when her name was announced before the curtain rose. In all fairness, if I had paid $162 a ticket for the “premium package” the local presenter is offering on some nights, I guess I’d rumble a bit too when an understudy was announced.

For Angie, it was a wonderful opportunity to perform the role for her husband who was visiting from New York (He’s the stage manager for “Fiddler” on Broadway) and for his parents who live in the Bay Area. Needless to say, by show’s end, I think people forgot they were seeing an alternate. Angie had one of her best shows!

On Friday morning, I made my way to San Francisco State University’s campus and met up with my friend Richard who is a VP in Administration at SFSU. He just announced his retirement for this Fall after 29 years with the school. He was meeting with the visiting Nashobabear (Les) who is moving back to SF after 12 years of teaching college in the Boston area. The three of us had a relaxed lunch in the faculty lounge. It was wonderful to introduce friends to friends who might be able to help each other:)

After lunch, Les and I took Muni to the Castro, walking up and down the streets testing each other’s knowledge of what business was in what building during the late 1970s. We also discovered a dear friend in common, John, who goes by the moniker Basso Bear. I just spoke with John yesterday who is working in Los Angeles as an admin for the costume shop at LA Opera. I will able to put Les and John back into contact. Small world.... and Les rocks! SF Bears and Livejournalers please put out a welcome mat for this great guy and his partner!

I have one show on Sunday and plan to meet techwizsfo and others for a night of country dancing at the Sundance after the performance. Yay! For those who don’t know me well - it’s a toss up as to whether I love to sing or dance more:) Also, in addition to my nephews' 18th birthdays on 3/17, my brother-in-law turned 50 yesterday and Kate Manning who plays the Mistress in "Evita" celebrated hers.

Finally, I got a lot of giggles shopping with Les at Under One Roof on Friday afternoon. I am still considering an Oscar Wilde Action Figure for lowfatmuffin:) However, my favorites were the Jesus Action Figure and Jesus Soap on a Rope....LOL! It made me miss the Trailer Trash Barbie sold on the sly a few years back.

As I arrived at the theater Friday night... one block away... this well-dressed Black guy in horn-rimmed glasses unexpectedly approached me, got right in my face and joyfully declared, “You’ve got God in you! I can see it in your face! You’ve got God in you!" Who knew?!? I guess I’ll have to buy that Jesus Soap on a Rope after all:) Soap on a rope! What better way to end this golden week!

Yeah, that Jesus Soap on a Rope gets the God right out!

I know Basso Bear as well. :-)

That's great for Angie that she got that opportunity on the "right" night with her family at the performance.

It's always nice when you're an understudy to get to perform the role with your loved ones in attendance. My folks got to see me play Piangi in "Phantom" only twice in four years...in San Antonio and Salt Lake City, though I did the role 100 times.

It's a question of timing... Seldom can you ask the person who does the role to let you go on... it's considered bad form...so you have to hope they are ill or on vacation at just the right time and that you, not the other cover, is asked to go on.

So am I and I was absolutely delighted to get to see you again and to finally spend a bit of time getting to know Scott. I've got a wonderful photo of the three of us on my digital. I had a print made today. Would you like a copy? Big Hugs!

Heh heh. He said "horn." And "rimmed." Heh heh.

And I guess if you're not careful with your Jesus soap, you COULD have God "in you." (Ouch! Wouldn't that STING?)

[irreverence alert lifted]

How great to have the gang all see you perform! The only thing better than a bunch of theatre queens is a bunch of theatre BEARS. :-)

Enjoy Sundance! I love that place! Kiss Ingu for me! He'll know who you're talking about.

When traveling to FL last week, I found the Virgin Mary action figures in a Dollar Tree, no less! I was seriously bummed that the Jesus action figure was sold out. They also had Noah and Moses, but it's just not the same thing. They don't carry these items in my Dollar Tree. I must write a letter in protest. But they also had a fabulous collection of plastic hor d'oeurve plates and cereal bowls featuring other less-popular Bible characters. Oh, to serve baked brie on a David and Goliath plate!

Did I mention the knock-off Barbie dolls that looked like French hookers from the 60's? Tres fabu!
