Alterations, Arrangements and Additions
Mar. 31st, 2006 06:03 pmThe bit where Officer Lonigan is hit over the head with a canvas painting has been altered. No more cuts or whacks for me. Now, the actor playing the artist Appopulous hits himself over the head with his painting out of frustration. The bit's so quick that the visual, no matter who wears the painting, registers and is gone. I am relieved.
I spent hours yesterday researching travel arrangements for my return to Texas post "Wonderful Town". I checked out different options for moving my furniture home, meaning the bedroom set, breakfast bar and stools which had been stored here since May 2004; I also spent hours on monster.com, grantwriting.com and other websites, trying to come up with a plan for my own internet-based business. I have one more paycheck before unemployment. It's stressful to contemplate; the reality will be worse.
I’ve checked out several options with my travel and moving. U-Haul wants $1000 for 8 days for a one-way rental of a small truck from Seattle to Austin (Brenham). The cost doesn’t include gas. Hertz, Avis, National and Budget want $800 to $1100 for a weekly rental of a mini-van. The drop off charge for one way drastically alters the overall cost, as does gas for a 2844-mile drive. FedEx can’t handle furniture the size of my bedroom pieces and Amtrak doesn’t ship furniture ...period. Storage runs $60/month for a 5X5X8 heated unit. I've considered selling the furniture, but sentimental me finds it hard to let it go. The pieces I have here are in terrific condition and they were the first items I bought with my own money after I graduated college.
However, for those who might be interested ... Amtrak does ship boxes, bicycles and musical instruments. It’s $55 for 51 to 100lbs; they offer 8x8 pallets; after the first 100lbs of boxes, it is 42 cents a lb. This might be a very reasonable option if you are moving and most of the contents are in boxes. I still haven’t found a decent and affordable way to get the furniture home. A friend suggested Pods today and I will follow up on that. If anyone has other suggestions I might check out, I welcome feedback.
As to the travel, I found a one-way fare on Southwest Airlines from Seattle to Austin for $89 + tax. Southwest allows you to check in three bags of 50lbs each. I’ve booked the flight. I’ve also made a reservation for a three-day, full-size car rental tied into the flight. I’m going to go down to Portland over the weekend of April 15 to visit my Palm Springs friends who are back home for rounds of chemotherapy. If you remember, they are a May-December couple and Monty, the younger of the two, has cancer. I want to get down there to show my love and support for his recovery before I head back to Texas.
Additions ... Nine of the actors in “Wonderful Town” are also in the 5th Avenue’s upcoming production of “Pippin”. They are rehearsing “Pippin” during the day and performing “Wonderful Town” at night. I got a pleasant surprise last night when I saw the title page for “Pippin”. Above the title, in the role of The Leading Player (Ben Vareen was the original star) was the name Keith Byron Kirk. Yay! Anyone who followed my “Evita” chronicles will recognize Keith as the actor who played Che in the last five and a half months of the “Evita” tour. I had no idea he was coming up here. His was last minute casting. Keith arrives Sunday night and it will be great to see him!
Finally, I had a wonderful afternoon with
lovesongman. Pat and I went to Torero’s on Capital Hill for lunch. I love eating at this restaurant since the owners Sally and Caesar have become friends and the food is delicious.
gotmoof will be happy to know that Pat tried the Cuervo Gold Shrimp fajitas and liked them as much as you did:) Afterward, Pat and I went down to a Western store in Renton and I helped Pat pick out new Western wear. It was a blast and I took hat pictures to share with my LJ friends ... *grin* ... Pat has been a true friend, a delightful companion since I’ve been in Seattle. Lucky for me, Pat’s a friend for life, a permanent addition, so there are more fun times ahead!
