I've been living in Seattle for about 13 months. Though I plan to move back to Texas at the end of next month, I've received amazing support from a new group of friends that I met while enjoying "Bearaoke" at Guppys in West Seattle.
On Tuesday nights, Bears and admirers rendezvous for an evening of enjoyment as they listen to their furry friends sing show tunes and whatever else the handsome DJ Jonathan picks as the theme of the night (or whatever they just plain want to sing). Jonathan has over 7,000 tracks from which to choose.
The first night, I walked in a Karaoke snob, but was soon converted to the easy comaraderie and fun of the experience. I make a living as a singer, but I thought, Hell, I'll try it out. My only Gay male friends at the time here in Seattle know the DJ. At least I'll see similar furry men. I also thought I'd hear a lot of drunken bad singing. That couldn't be further from the truth. Instead I found a warm group of guys who are supportive of everyones' attempts and there are truly many guys who sing who are flat out good. It's also a good-looking group and fur abounds:)
Through Bearaoke, I've gotten to know 6 or 7 guys who I will be friends with for the rest of my life. Jonathan, and his partner Pat, in particular are wonderful people; they have become just like brothers to me. We share similar beliefs, senses of humor and a love of music. I was over to the their house today and it was very definitely a "home". They are honorable, supportive men and we laugh a lot which is terrific.
If any of you come to a visit to Seattle, be sure to check out Guppys on Tuesday nights from 8pm to midnight. You'll have a great time even if you don't sing. If you do, say hello from Neil!
