The Ole Grey Boots...
Aug. 27th, 2004 03:39 pmThey ain't what they used to be... (sung to the tune of "The Old Grey Mare"...) I've just retired my favorite pair of cowboy boots. They've been with me through thick and thin, been resoled twice and have served honorably. However, their time has passed. The soles are paper thin and there is no longer enough leather to stretch for a third re-soling. They are beginning to leak in the rain:)
I've got to have reliable footwear for the upcoming tour and a good pair of boots is at the top of the list. I'll take along a pair of loafers, tennis shoes for working out and a pair of hiking boots too. I'll wear the boots when flying because of baggage weight limitations and also because they are easy to pull off at security.
Additionally, there are social reasons for taking cowboy boots. I've already got tentative plans to go boot-scootin' in Chicago, Washington, DC, San Francisco and Dallas. I want to be at the top of my game:)
I went to Shepler's Western Wear here in Austin today and bought a pair of black Ariat boots. They are known for their comfort, are really well-cushioned and are a nice cross between a riding and walking heel. Hell, when I have them on I'm 6'2" tall. (I like that! :)
A plus - the cost was reasonable. So what if they're not fancy alligator, lizard or ostrich skin.. I can live with that. They're just a simple durable bull hide that should hold up well in all of the different climates to which I'll be traveling and look good with everything from jeans to suits. Got a belt to match too....
My old grey boots may not be what they used to be, but I'm not giving up on them. They're just going into closet retirement till I call on them next. May the new Ariats last me for some time to come, as the old grey ones did(singing) "many long years ago"...
