In The Country With Linda and Vic
Nov. 9th, 2004 06:19 pmMonday was a day off from the show. It was the first day off after a week where we tackled three run-throughs and eight performances in one week. It was also a week of understudy rehearsals and on Saturday afternoon, Angela DiCicco, one of the Eva understudies went on in the role. The cast rose to the occasion and supported her admirably. She handled all of the costume changes with poise, (and with a bit of luck:) never having run them before she was asked to do them in front of an audience.
I used my time off to visit my friend Linda and her husband Vic in Plymouth, MA, taking a train from South Station down to this gateway to Cape Cod. (Linda and Vic are the the couple whose wedding I sang in this summer.) In August, they moved to their new home in a 55+ community. It's in a rural area, tucked away in a hillside of pines; the community has a golf course, club house and other activities for seniors. It has a lot of charm!
My friends' house has about 2200 square feet of finished living space and it already feels like a home thanks to Linda's touch. She's Italian to the core and it shows in the warm touches throughout the house. Most of her furniture she purchased while we were on the road together in "Phantom"; in fact, I helped her pick it all out in North Carolina, so I immediately felt at home and at ease.
Linda fixed a wonderful chicken parmesan dinner last night and then a tasty Eggs Benedict this morning. We looked at the wedding video and pictures of their honeymoon cruise; I then pulled out albums that I've put together since I've been back on the road. It might sound tedious... a home-cooked dinner and looking at photos, but that would leave out the importance of shared memories and the sound of laughter. No one makes me laugh louder or harder than Linda and the opposite is true. With Linda, all of the lines I usually think of afterward, come right when they should:) Laughter really is great medicine. After six weeks away from home, being the first guest in the home of one of your nearest and dearest friends, is heaven!
I took the train back this afternoon, enjoying the quiet, reading a new Janet Evanovich novel. Another one of my favorite activities. I decided to walk back to the hotel from South Station and damn, it was cold! The temperature dropped 25 degrees between the train ride on Monday and the one back today. It's 28 degrees right now (Houston is still in the 70s.). I've pulled out the scarf, gloves and top coat and it still isn't enough. I may have to rethink the coat situation for Chicago:)
One hour to go before the beginning of the second week here in Boston. It will be interesting to see how the show goes tonight with all of us rested. Everyone was exhausted by Sunday night; at least for me, the high C's will be easier after a quiet night's rest at my friends' house in the country. (The hotel has been noisy and led to disruptive sleep patterns for me.)
I'm looking forward to a few activities during the week. I'm meeting Les Wright (nashobabear) on Thursday for the first time; visiting with friends from Seattle, composers, who are in town supervising the reading of a new musical they wrote. It will be done at Emerson College; I'm getting together with a friend who played John Adams in a production of "1776" that I performed in during summer stock in 2001. (Scott is a news anchor for the CBS affiliate in Boston); and finally Linda and Vic are seeing the show Friday night. Hmmmm... I guess the week will be busier than I thought! However, right now, for another hour, I'm enjoying a bit of peace and quiet:)
And... the Soul Meme results for me:)
