So! You Think You Can Dance?

A guilty pleasure this summer television season has been SYTYCD on ABC. Tim and I DVR the series and then review the two evenings of programs at our leisure. I like the new format - fewer contestants dancing with All-Stars from past seasons. The work by the choreographers has been particularly strong this year; a dance last weekend, a Hip-Hop routine by Tabitha and Napolean, danced by all-star Twitch and ballet dancer Alex, was one of the best ... EVER!

My favorites to win ... heck, just my favorites ... are Alex, Lauren and Ashley. Anyone watching the show knows most of the women were cut early. Hopefully, I'm not spoiling anyone's results by saying how sad I am that my pick to win, Alex, has had to drop out of the competition with a torn achilles tendon. He has surgery next Tuesday.

There was a special performance tonight on the results show by the cast of the National Touring Company of "In The Heights". One of my favorite dancers, a friend and frequent co-worker onstage in Seattle, was featured tonight during the broadcast. From having rehearsed there, I know this photo of Daniel Cruz was taken in the basement rehearsal space at The 5th Avenue Theatre! I'm really proud of Daniel!



On another topic, I just saw the list of nominations for this year's Emmy Awards. I am particularly excited for the multiple nominations for "Glee" (especially for Mike O'Malley who plays Kurt's father) and for the casts of "Modern Family" and "The Good Wife" ... such fine work and writing. Kind of odd, though, that all of the adult actors in "Modern Family" were nominated for Emmy's except Ed O'Neill. He's sort of the heart of the series.

Alex has been our favorite, too. I must confess that none of the girls excites me. We also really like Billy, Kent and Robert (and probably in that order).

I really like Billy, too, but I don't think he has a chance to win. I don't think his sweet gay boy personality is motivating voters to pick up the phone. He would have been gone last night if not for the incident with Alex.

Yes it was quite heartbreaking watching tonight. Alex is so good. Nearly broke my heart watching Jose's reaction as well as the others. Great show. Does a lot to bring notice to some great dancers

It does put the art form out there that is dance and brings it so entertainingly to the masses. The dancers are competing for a title ... It's clever that it's not America's "best dancer", but "favorite dancer" ... as it shifts the focus ... You can be the best dancer and not win the title. It's a subtle ego thing, but important. The dancers really support each other, as you can't go through this intense experience at odds with each other.

I have a feekling that Kent will win SYTYCD. Not the best dancer, but he's very likeable with a good back-story, and I'm thinking he's probably leading in the voting right now.

So good to see two shows I love recognized also -
Glee and Modern Fmaily. And who'd have thunk Mike O'Malley would be nominated. His performance is a gem of course, but it's such a small role, it would have been easy to overlook him.

I'm just wondering when 18 year old Kent will come out ... and when he'll be old enough for Adam Shankman to ask him out:) LOL! Kent is a fine dancer, but for me, he's in the middle of the pack in terms of talent ... Jose is sweet, but not a great dancer ... Robert and Billy are superb, with an edge to Billy in my estimation. I don't know who I'll root for now ... Alex was by far my favorite.

Fortunately, there's a category for Guest Actor in a Television Series- Comedy. That's where Mike's nominated ... as is Kristin Chenowith ... Now, the kid who plays Kurt ... He's nominated for a Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy.

I did think that Nigel and Mia were remarkably racist toward Adachike last night. I was glad Mia apologized but she didn't mention her major transgression.

I thought it was a bit overboard ... but, I also think their remarks led to people picking up the phone and voting for Adachike. I was hoping he'd be in the bottom three, but I believe their inappropriate comments saved him. I was surprised to hear an apology. I guess I was more focused on Alex leaving ... Tim asked me to fast forward to the end of the results show, so I missed some of the controversy.

YAY IN THE HEIGHTS.

I read a few days ago that lin and the cast were going to be on it, but I had a gig tonight, hoping to catch it on hulu.


I am really glad chris colfer got a nomination, too.

I am really SAD that Treme didn't get more recognition. It's pretty damn brilliant.

I was thrilled to see the number, as Daniel was clearly visible at several points. He's the male swing, so someone must not have been available ... It was their night off. The tour's been in LA for quite some time!

Really glad for Chris Colfer's nomination. Out of the male regulars on the show, outside of Matt Morrison, his work is the strongest.

What is Treme? I'm not familiar with it ... or at least, I'm not picking up on the reference.

Treme is an HBO show about New Orleans in the restoration period after Katrina.

It's filmed in the actual Treme [a section of New Orleans], and it focuses on REAL new orleans community and music. All of the music is done by real N'Orleans Musicians, and it's all done LIVE ON THE SHOW. Like, you're really hearing what they're well playing.

It's also really well written, directed, and acted. I can't wait for next season.

I think it's still available on demand if you have HBO [which Tim loving True Blood tells me you do.]

Ah, that explains it ... I would love to see it, but Tim and I do not have HBO. We can't afford it right now. He's downloading current True Blood episodes to his computer and watching it there. He tried to get me hooked on the series, but I just find it distasteful ... despite the strong performances:)

Neil hates True Blood- he can't speak badly enough of it after they killed the grandmother off. Refuses to like it now, so he couches his dislike in "sex, blood and violence and unlikeable characters".

I appreciate many things about the series ... the writing ... the metaphors ... the casting ... the performances ... but, it's okay not to want to watch it. I find it distasteful.

The Pacific ...one of my most enjoyed TV shows this year

I believe The Pacific actually earned 24 nominations, most this season. I also heard that it was the best miniseries about war every produced! I did not see it. I assume it will be on DVD soon, if it isn't already. I may give it to my Dad for Christmas, though he wasn't old enough for WW2, serving in The Korean War.

Missed this post ... but the info it contains is interesting and, if i had a TV, I'd bet it'd soon be one of my favorite shows.
I have seen some episodes of Glee and find it enchanting (same goes for True Blood... though perhaps 'enchanting' is to sweet a word for it -lol)

There's been too much doom and gloom coming from me. I appreciate the patience my friends, like you, are exhibiting, till I find my way ...

Glee is delightful ... music ... satire ... at times tugging the heartstrings. True Blood? Well ... I can understand why people are addicted to it ... I see the series' strengths ... But, I just find I feel like I need to take a bath and scrub myself with lye soap after watching it:)
