I was looking for a place to have lunch today in the small Texas town where I work. While driving, I passed the following hair salons: Curl Up & Dye and It's Shear Heaven. Am I the only one who thinks it's odd (and deliciously ironic) that the businesses are located a block from the city cemetery?

I swear it's true ... I can take photos ... :)

Curl Up & Dye is brilliant. Thanks for sharing!

Curl Up & Dye is the name of the salon that the Carrie Fisher character works at in The Blues Brothers. Immediately after the scene where Aretha Franklin sings "Think", they cut to the exterior of the salon (showing the name), and then the interior showing Carrie Fisher looking at a catalog or manual for flame throwers while doing her nails.

You've never seen "The Blues Brothers"? It's a great movie, if only for the line:

Q: What kind of music do you have here? (in this bar)
A: We have both kinds: Country and Western

LOL! Nope ... Never seen "Blues Brothers" .. but that's not unusual .. I've not seen Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, Titanic, Gone with the Wind, etc ... Movies, for me, are a social activity. I like to dress up, go to the theatre with a friend or group of friends ... Plus, I like very specific genres. I own over a hundred DVDs and never watch them unless I have out of town guests. Just a quirk, I guess ...

And for me, pulling out a DVD while sitting at home alone with popcorn is a great way to spend an evening!

You do need to have more out-of-town guests, though, so that you can see some of those movies!

You have to look your best when it's your time to go, right?

I've seen a couple salons called Curl Up & Dye before, but not close to a cemetery.

It's all a bit surreal ... I go from a nursing home where one woman introduces herself to me 28 times in a week, asks me if I'm a Baptist minister... I reply I'm a Methodist. She thinks about it for a second and says, "Well, we have a few of those a ways back, but we don't talk about em, but I suppose you can stay." She then critiques my clothing. (Evidently, I'm an excellent dresser:) She's 89 and thinks she's rented an apartment and needs to leave. Another man, waylaid me in the hall several times claiming someone had come in during the night and put a patch on him that causes pain. He said he needed help and asked for it. The nurse said, who did you ask? He replied, the big bald guy. (meaning me) OY! I get in the car right after all of that and drive past these establishments:)

Monday's always a fun day at the home as the beautician comes in and all of the little old ladies roll up and down the halls so we can see their tight little curls.

I still like, "Turn Your Head and Coiff", from "The Simpsons", when Lisa went out for Little Miss Springfield.

The best I've ever heard of in real life......run by 2 friends of a friend of mine in San Louis Obispo: "Two Old Fags Do Your Hair"!

.....and "countrywide chain' sounds like something in a squaredance!

Which place does the housecall beautician work for?

"Curl up and Dye" was the name of a beauty shop in Alton, Missouri when I worked there 23 years ago. They also had a tire and muffler place with a sign out front that said "Collins Automotive. Tiring work. Exhausting work." Always made me smile.

In another early job, I was (for all intents and purposes) a traveling activities director, and I went to 7 different nursing facilities in SW Missouri. One of my favorites, called "Northside," had a view out of about half the room's windows of probably the largest cemetary in Springfield. It was disquieting to walk into someone's room and see them sitting and staring out at that cemetary...I think it probably registered more with me than it did with them, they were a pretty mellow bunch.

The new gig sounds like it's going great, congrats!!!

I've said before in my journal, but I plan to have carved on my headstone the words ..."Waiting for an Encore". :)

Perhaps, seeing the well-tended cemetery outside the window brought comfort.

A traveling activities director? That sounds like fun:)

Thanks so very much! I've always appreciated how you present yourself in these pages. I know you're the kind of guy I want as a friend. I'm happy to be added to your list!!

Perfect musical number! ... why is it that hair salons all seemed to have gone to 'pun heaven' for their names ? - I imagine the full list from across the country would be extensive.
As to the ironic location ... well, the beauticians need to practice on somebody - or is that 'some body'?! LOL

Photos? - duh, YES! Besides, I could do with some visual entertainment right now. Have had to cancel all my galavanting about due to a sudden bout of extreme back pain (am fine... as long as I don't move too much. Yeah, it's BooHoo me, but I'll survive).

Feel better. my friend! Did you pull something? Perhaps a visit to a chiropracter would be in order. You know you will have to hit the ground running as soon as you get back to Madison.

Did you connect or correspond with [livejournal.com profile] elfkat?

Big HUGS!

All I have to do is mis-align accidentally... this time I just stood 'wrong'. The pain comes in the form of muscle spasms, like the worst charlie horse cramp you've ever had ( it's making me walk as if I'm 98). But the spasms are working their way outward, away from the spine, which is a good sign. For the moment I'm just braving it (with doses of ibuprofin and Aleve), but thanks for the advice nevertheless.

I did get in touch with [livejournal.com profile] elfkat, but our schedules were not jiving, so I'll have to look forward to meeting her in person next year.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, dear friend.

*sigh* I know how painful it is and that you are making light of it. I do hope it eases up, before you have to get on the plane.

Hugs back!

I ran across this place in Lake City, FL.
Lake City is extreme S GA by disposition, FL by geography.

WhackADo

"Hello. WhackADo, would you like an appointment?"
WhackADo sounds like a bathhouse name from a bad pr0n vid. *innocent look*

There was a "Curl Up & Dye" in the next town down the road (Saraland, AL) from where I grew up. The broad that ran it was a walking stereotype of the southern, loud, flamboyant, mardi gras float, female drag queen, kind of small town character.
Thanks for the giggle.

I'm sort of familiar with extreme south Georgia (Colquitt) and yup, that sign looks authentic all right. I'm tickled by the sly silliness of this example of native wit.
Besides, I needed a smile today...thanks for sharing !

I drove by a hair salon this week: Sweeny Todds. Would it be considered suicide to enter?

With the amount of hair I have left, perhaps it would be if I went there:)
