Fireworks on September 1
Sep. 1st, 2007 08:00 amAt 7:30am, the fireworks began. A Saturday morning, at 7:30am. Am I missing some cultural reference or am I justified in being a tad annoyed? It's been 30 minutes of cock-a-doodle-doo's, barking dogs and popping explosive sounds somewhere in the neighborhood. What a way to be awakened!
Wait! Perhaps, the fireworks are in celebration of a rarely seen phenomenon ... I mowed a lawn yesterday for the first time since I was 12 years old! Nah ... At most that deserves applause:)
Maybe it's because the City of Houston joined the 21st century and enacted a smoking ban in bars and restaurants which began at midnight ... I don't think so ...
Are the fireworks in honor of the kick-off for the football season? I'm headed to College Station this afternoon to attend the Texas A&M-Montana State football game with my sister, brother and niece. Unlikely.
Could it be for my vocal coaching in Houston tomorrow at 4pm? That's something to cheer about, but still ...
Has anyone seen my "Man of La Mancha" script and score from 2004? After searching for hours yesterday, finding it would be something to celebrate!!
The fireworks have stopped after 45 minutes, though the neighborhood rooster continues to crow. I'm going back to bed! Is there is a legit reason as to why there are fireworks on September 1 at the butt crack of dawn? I'd like to know .. in about two hours ...
(Edit: As I paid the monthly fee for my storage unit about 11am, I casually mentioned to the ladies who work there about the fireworks, the firecracker sounds, early this morning. They replied, "Hon, it's the beginning of dove season. Those were rifle shots you were hearing." At 7:30am? Geez ... Remember, I live right downtown!)

Date: 2007-09-01 03:23 pm (UTC)The back story is that when I reached 12, my brother was 6 and I manipulated my folks into thinking it was time that Jeff learned and I never looked back:). As an adult, I've owned two homes. The first had acreage and I was touring 50 weeks a year. I moved my folks into my home to take care of it; my Dad loves to mow on his honkin' big riding mower. Since I moved to my current house, my nephew's had a lawn mowing business; I was happy to be one of his clients. He's back at school now - hence, my mowing:)
Still - It's a shocking sight! LOL!

Date: 2007-09-01 03:40 pm (UTC)In Kansas City, Roy's yard was a nice size for mowing. It took about 45 minutes each for the front & back. It was actually very therapeutic.
And I can't believe you were able to get your parents to make your 6 y/o brother mow the lawn. You must have been very convincing!

Date: 2007-09-01 06:58 pm (UTC)As to the yard ... It took me about 50 minutes total. It's a nice sized yard, but quite doable in a fairly short time. I just have to make sure that I mow in the early morning or near dusk, otherwise the temps and humidity are unbearable.

Date: 2007-09-02 04:12 am (UTC)Yes, I mowed and did a good job ... but .. um ... I don't think you have anything to say. It's not exactly your favorite thing to do either:) LOL!
Got your message when I got home a few minutes ago around 11pm. I attended an A&M football game with Colleen, Jeff & Cait. They all say howdy!
HUGS!
