This poem was forwarded to me by my conductor friend Elaine. A close friend of hers, troubled by the events at Virginia Tech wrote the piece two nights ago. Elaine calls it, "a beautiful memorial, a wonderfully worded expression of the sadness and grief felt through our country the past few days. May these words help us to understand, feel, and not forget the pain. And may it keep us aware of those in pain, that we might reach out to them."
Though the writing is a bit rough, it is heartfelt and the emotion comes through, so I decided to post it to my journal for friends to read.
From the anonymous author friend of Gail's ... "I only know one way to truly express when so much happens. Words can never convey enough, yet they are all I have to use."
32
So much blood, so much pain
One man’s anger exploded so vain
Lives so precious, inexplicably lost
Some showing bravery, paying the cost
Gray skies above as tragedy reigns
32
So much innocence, so many dreams
Quickly lost, our tears now in streams
Many lost, in a question of why
With a look above asking the sky
From grief to anger, tears become screams
32
For now, when I see a flickering light
I hope the many will share the same sight
The vision of an eternally burning flame
No matter their world, never the same
Prayers for them, as they begin their fight
32
Today we cry, though we never knew
A dancer, a teacher, a dreamer to name a few
Friends and families now in our heart
No matter how many miles apart
A simple pledge, we won’t forget you

The last line offers the act of hope risen from the tragedy.
