I used to do that back in High School when I was competing in Extemporaneous speaking.. You were allowed 15 minutes of research and one 3"x5" card of notes, and BOY did dropping vowels make more info fit the card..

I am surprised that the 55% number is so low.

Funny thing however, I can't read "txt-speek" well at all, and yet most (who do that sort of thing) find it quite simple. I suppose it has to do with abbreviations, whereas this is all about transposition. You don't need an external context to read the paragraph.

I suspect any highly fluent reader, or some one who reads things like music would have very little trouble reading it. The brain untangles stuff like this once it's been trained with enough practice.

While I was "courting" George we had a long distance relationship. I would pass the time on the seven hour trip by reading the road signs backwards. It all started when I drove through Avon (Nova) MN, though the trip through Remer added nothing to my talents. My ability to read upside down has also come in handy at work, especially when I don't let others in on my talent. This posting was not a problem for me.

Now, on the other hand, I sometimes am at a loss for the right word and think what I say looks a lot like the paragraph above.

The error tolerance of the human mind, when applied thusly, is why spam is occasionally so successful. We can filter on words like Viagra. But when there becomes thousands of ways to spell it, many of which do not match our definitions of proper word construction, and are yet "readable" by a human eye, then our programmatic approaches to finding and blocking them fail. And that's just from a lexical point of view. Then there's obfuscation techniques and other tricks to complicate things further.
