It’s odd what you recall, what triggers a memory. I saw the “Bridge to Terabithia” with my twin nephews and brother on Friday night. We thought we were going to see a fantasy flick; instead, we were treated to a sweet, sad story of friendship between two outcast teens who escape to a world populated by their vivid imaginations. I liked it alot! Later on, I was telling other family members about the film and it created random associations.

For instance, when I was child, if you picked up the phone, you spoke to an operator and they connected you to the person you named. When I was about 10, we had a three digit number for our phone listing. I still remember it ... 157 ... that got you the Badders residence in Duke Center, Pennsylvania. All of my family remembered the number, except my brother who was too young at the time to recall it. We got our first seven-digit number when we moved to Houston in the late ‘60s.

My sister and I got into a discussion about Junior High Band. I was drum major in the 9th grade. The song selections Colleen and I recalled (not with pleasure) were “The Horse”, “Spinning Wheel, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" “and “Guantanamara”:) We played those songs to death. I think Colleen could still play her flute part from memory on those songs and I believe I could do the same, though I haven’t played trombone since college.

It felt like a path down memory lane when I strolled around Brenham’s town square with my folks yesterday afternoon. Brenham had a Spring Festival; roads were blocked off and various merchants had booths set up where you could buy plants, jewelry, birdhouses, tractors, swings for your porch, bedazzled clothing and various homemade sundries. Folks were sitting in the shade (It was 86 degrees by 1:00pm.) eating their roasted ears of corn, funnel cakes, tator twisters, Fried Snickers and chicken on a stick. An under-rehearsed group of students played music in the gazebo; they had me chuckling as they hit occasional clunker notes. There were various puppies and dogs up for adoption from the local Humane Society and PAWS. My heart was stolen immediately by a little brown and white hound and a 6-month old Black Lab, as he awkwardly stumbled over his huge paws:)

I was able to walk from the Festival to my house. As I walked the three blocks home, I was treated to the sight of the beautiful plantation house (a registered landmark) next door to me which is suddenly for sale. The yard is so well-taken care of ... tulip and red-bud trees and camellias in bloom, a graceful water feature adding a soothing backdrop. Then I looked to the house on the other side of me where a young guy named Speedy lives with his wife and baby. He runs a business called Rusty Nuts Cycles. Such is life in a small town:)

An Update: Steve came through his heart surgery with flying colors. It turned out that he required four bypasses. His friend Bob called me right after the procedure was completed. Thanks to everyone for their positive thoughts.

It seems like we always had seven digits to dial, though I remember when we had a prefix as the first two digits (Melrose was ours.) I can also remember when we had a party line.

I was in band from fifth grade until college. When I was in high school band, we also played "The Horse" and "Spinning Wheel." We never played "Guantanamara", though.

I was in band from 5th grade through the end of the first semester of my freshman year at Texas A&M. I don't miss playing the trombone, but am grateful the training, the gift of reading music that band afforded me. It really is a blessing to be able to read music and parts in musical theater ... Surprisingly few professional singers and dancers can read music unless they are classically trained.

I played alto saxophone myself. I don't miss playing, either. I think being in band gave me a better appreciation of music.

I can *still* play my high school fight song on trumpet from memory. Haven't picked up the instrument in years.

Somethings just get drummed into your fingers :-)

Hmmm ... I don't think I could do that ... I believe I still remember the slide positions and how to read the bass cleff, but I think I would have trouble initially with the mouth piece. Course ... You're probably a lot closer to your high school years than I am. *grin*

Recollection (the way you do it) is such a wonderful thing.
"An' then I picked up a Bell telephone, an'a strange woman started in te' talk... What next? What next?!" - Will, in "Oklahoma" singing that everything's up to date in Kansas City. Our first phone, in Minnesota, was like that. So comforting to know that I'm not the only one now living who can remember that far back (LOL).

On your next neighborhood walk, how about taking the camera along -hint, hint =0)
Thanks for sharing the good news about Steve !

It's not thhhhhhhhhhhat far back. LOL! I lived in a town of 500 people. There wasn't much of a need for more than 3 digits till we moved to 2 million population Houston. (If it sounds like I'm rationalizing how far back it is, you're right!:) How does it feel to be 8 days older than me? I'm on the 22nd.

Don't worry, I had the calendar marked ;0)
