I had barely taken my seat in the heart surgeon’s office opposite my Dad today when a voice with a heavy Texas twang informed me, “I don’t mind being old. I just mind the side effects!” I turned around and looked at two senior ladies of a certain age ... actually 86 and 88 ... sisters ... skinny and bony with carefully coiffed upsweeps (purple rinse gleaming in the fluorescent overhead light), in full Texas matron make-up ... large baubles in their ears and on their fingers ... colorful sexy tops and capri pants, tasteful pumps showing off still well-turned ankles. Texas women of a certain age don’t go anywhere without making an effort. Their effort must have been considerable:)

When I realized the chat was aimed at me, I nodded and smiled and asked how they were doing. The first voice belonged to the older of the two sisters. (I’ll call her Lottie:) Lottie quickly (and loudly) shared with me that she was from Kemah; her sister “Neva” was from Rockdale. Neva at 86 years young had had a quadruple bypass three weeks before and was getting around just fine, thank you, without the assistance of a cane or walker.

Neva was at a dance three weeks ago when her chest started to pain her. She said to her beau, I do believe I need to sit the rest of this one out. She stayed at the party (evidently, it was a good one) till it was over. She didn’t go to the doctor the next day either. When she finally called two days after the attack, he told her to get there as soon as possible. She drove herself and showed up at the hospital alone. When the doctor scolded her, she sassed back, saying, “You told me to get over here right away. I did. You didn’t mention me bringin’ anyone else.”

Neva and Lottie have seven brothers and one sister, all of them alive and kicking. Before going in to see her surgeon for her second followup, she was scolding the office clerk. Saying aloud to everyone in ear shot, “Can you imagine this little ole heart attack and bypass surgery’s cost me $90,000 so far and they tell me all the bills aren’t in yet!!” Lottie was most offended that they charged $12 a tylenol. “Why, I coulda brought Neva a bottle from the house and saved Medicare some money if they just had a told me!!”, she declared.

A couple of minutes later, Neva and Lottie were called to the examining room. Neva shuffled by me with determination, arms outstretched for balance, with a list of questions for the Doc. About 15 minutes later, she triumphantly re-entered the room. She told me, “I got all of my questions answered. I’m gonna go dancin’ soon. I’m gonna be back drivin’ ... (and most importantly) ...He told me I could have a drink!” The two women, both forces of nature, exited the room, slamming the door behind them. I looked at Mom and Dad and another couple in the room and suddenly, we all began to smile, then laugh. Gotta love that kind of gumption!

I’m in serious like for Sirius radio. All of these trips to the doctor have been made much easier by having great music bouncin’ off the walls of the car. I’m really into the Country Roadhouse, Bluegrass and Broadway stations and listen to OutQ106 daily. This small corner of the world sure seems a lot bigger with 198 choices, no commercials or censorship while I’m driving!

Kevin Smith was on “Regis and Kelly” this morning pimping his new film “Clerks 2”. I have several close friends who speak of his movies with reverence. I haven’t seen any of his films, so this isn’t a comment about his work. I can only speak to my impression (negative) from seeing this show. Smith showed up today on the program looking like a slob in cut-off shorts and bowling shirt (didn’t even look clean), talked about his smelly feet, was rude and abrasive. (I suspect he was trying to be funny and at the same time let the audience know he was slumming.) It was priceless seeing Regis non-plussed, but if you don’t want to do that kind of promotion, don’t do it. He makes someone like Michael Moore, whose mocumentaries I enjoy, but personally dislike, look like a class act.

My great-great-aunt Bob (Babette, but she preferred "Bob") used to tell me,

"Getting old is hell - but it sure beats the alternative!"

Amen to that! I think I'd like you Aunt Bob! She sounds like a pistol! When I get as old as these two ladies, I hope I'm as eccentric, out-spoken and feisty. They were on full beam charm with me too, even flirtatious:)

Good luck with the move to the new house! It all sounds so very exciting! I'm envious in a good way! HUGS!

I just don't "get" the Kevin Smith idolization. I loathe every one of his movies that I've seen, and although he is cute, your notations bother me about him as well.

I hope your father is doing better.

Dad has been doing better ... I guess two doctors appts and three rehab sessions in one week should help:) (Last week was four and three.) He's making more rapid physical progress than with this memory. I've changed. Somewhere along the line, I've relaxed and accepted that Brenham with my family is exactly the place I'm intended to be this summer. I'm still pursuing jobs, but understanding that I have to be here in Texas right now.

As to Kevin Smith ... I"ve seen rappers, anti-establishment actors .. even the official slob actors such as Jack Black on Regis and Kelly and such programs; they have been better dressed than Smith. However, it was his attitude that made me check out. Isn't he the director that made Jersey Girls?

Glad to hear you are continuing to get better! Many hugs!

Longnecks and short stories

(My favorite Mark Chestnutt album title) is appropriate here.
A wonderful tale to share - Thanks!

Kevin Smith is always a little across the line. I haven't seen too much of him or his films but...

One of my all time favorite films is Chasing Amy. An adult examination of relationships.

I'm actually a pretty big KS fan, but I have to say, of all his films, Chasing Amy is his best work, by far.

"Um, what's a nubian?" That whole scen *still* gives me a fit of laughter when I even think of it.

Indeed - what a delightful scene and then the scene in the bar following.

A heady discussion of the sexual tensions in the Archie comics with the memorable line " Here's a dollar. Go to the corner store and buy yourself a clue" (Did you notice the visual puns while they played darts afterwards?)

I just imagine that Kevin Smith really is smart. He just isn't always about looking pretty for the interviews.

The search for love with real adult reasoning. Have you seen The Opposite of Sex?

Oh, and did you see Jay and SIlent Bob Strike Back... There is a "nod" to Chasing Amy in the final bit... Banky and HooperX hook up ;-)

I'll check out some of Smith's movies ... as I said, I haven't seen any, so my remarks aren't about his work. I react negatively to anyone, celebrity or not, with poor grooming. When you're a public figure ... when making a product you wish to be consumed by the public ... you make compromises to get that product out there ... a compromise such as hawking it on television shows. Smith's cultivated anti-establishment image was every bit as a calculated as those women who appear wearing the $1000 Manolo Blanicks heels .. except he came across as a heel. I don't care if you have a handsome face, he looked stupid in the clothes he wore. (See, I really had no reaction to him or opinion about him. *grin*)

Oh, don't get me wrong... his movies, save Chasing Amy, and large parts of Dogma totally suck, but they *do* suck in a consistent way. They also don't try to be anything they're not, which is a nice change of pace. They're just goofy fun.

Thanks, Mark! You would have loved meeting this duo!! Your drawl and your droll humor would have been a perfect mix with that of the ladies. That purple rinse always does me in, but it was the fact that Neva was on a date when this all happened that has earned my unending admiration:)

My reaction to Smith was mostly about his bad manners. But then again, I don't understand people that think shorts and sloppy shirts are appropriate attire for every situation. He had a handsome face which became uglier with every sentence he uttered. I will, however, check out "Chasing Amy". HUGS!

It really has changed my driving experience. We are in the car every day right now ... hour long drives to various doctors and rehab. Before, I would have lost the local country station 15 miles out of town. The other choices would have been Christian music and Spanish language programming. Now, I've got show tunes or Bluegrass all the way. It's making my day a lot easier to endure.

Hugs to David and you!

You're welcome! I tried to capture the flavor of their speech. Have you seen the movie "Sordid Lives"? It's a hoot! In the movie, the matriarch of the family dies while having elicit sex in a motel with a younger man. The younger man is played by Beau Bridges. Beau's character has lost both legs in Viet Nam. The woman dies when she trips over the legs in the dark and hits her head on the bathroom sink. If you see it (or have seen it), the sisters looked like this woman laid out in the coffin (except for the purple rinse in Neva's hair:)

HUGS!

While they were chatting (and flirting) with me, I was thinking, I've got to remember this. It is just too funny. There wasn't anything they didn't have an opinion about. Lottie had driven 120 miles to be with here sister, didn't think anything of it:) I hope I'm that alert and when I make it to 88! :)

Hope you're doing well ... I really am having withdrawl from meeting you and the others in Minneapolis. However, I've gained strength from doing so and am fighting the feeling of isolation here with all of my might.

HUGS!

It is a worthy aspiration! I adored these two women. If I had to be in a yet another doctor's office with my folks, this made it worthwhile. I can see you now ... the Southern California version of Neva with maybe a bit of surfer talk thrown in just to entertain and be colorful. I sure do hope that one day I get to meet the real Kat in person! HUGS!

Thanks for the thoughts for Dad. There is progress ...

If I had introduced Lottie and Neva as Forrest's aunts in "Bear With Me", you'd swear I had gone too far over-the-top. =o)

While I am no devotee of Kevin Smith (Tho he IS cute, and cleans up well), I highly reccommend "Dogma", especially if you're well-churched. Where else could you see a Holy flaming apparition doused with a fire extinguisher?

I'll check out his films. I know Tim has spoken highly of his work. I was just reacting to his appearance on the talk show. It's too bad he didn't "clean up well" for his segment on the program. I get irked by people who deliberately and self-absorbedly go out of their way to offend. Nothing about his promotional appearance made me want to see Clerks 2. If he was as smart as he thinks he is, he would tailor his remarks to encourage a wider range of people to see his work. After all, wasn't one of his last films Jersey Girls? A major bomb ...

As to the ladies ... feel free to borrow if Forrest needs colorful aunts:) I made up the names, but not their story, to protect the innocent:) HUGS!

Spent part of last week visiting my second cousin Nova, up in Be
midji, MN. She looks frail, but ain't, has a soft, quavering voice & deadly wit. While at Nova's apartment, my sister asked her about how often she needed her walker. "I on-ly...", she answered, "use it...for...ef-fect!"
From: [identity profile] mrdreamjeans.livejournal.com
THAT is priceless!!!! I love seniors who can take their infirmities and make light of them. I hope I approach those years with as much droll wit, determination and gumption as the ladies and your cousin Nova. Thanks for sharing!! HUGS!
From: [identity profile] huladavid.livejournal.com
The thing about Nova is that she really doesn't need the walker at all (I'm actually not sure why she has it). She also told us that on her headstone she wants put "Thanks for stopping by".

Great story, if you see either of those "young" ladies again, why don't ya give'em a high five from me ;o)

As for Kevin Smith, while I didn't see the interveiw with "Regis and Kelly", I can tell you, being his "slob look" is kind of his shtick. I can understand it being a turn off for some, but he's at least up front with it normally with a "take me as I am, or leave me" quality. Usually, he makes fun of himself to a fault, including his movies, which is probably some of what you saw from him in his interveiw. He's actually a really pretty cool guy, so try not to let this first impression of him form your opinion of him too much ;o)

Date: 2006-07-20 02:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrdreamjeans.livejournal.com
I hear you ... and I will check out a couple of his movies ... but if his movies are about the kind of people he seems to be ... the slacker thing ... I won't like them. Maybe it says a lot about me, but I wouldn't go see films like "Dumb and Dumber" ... "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" (did see it and hated it) or the current, "You, Me and Dupree" because I find nothing entertaining about stupidity, losers or life spinning out of control. Since he's not my type, I don't buy into the cute thing, so he didn't catch any slack from me when it came to his tasteless remarks.

I hope I do get to meet these ladies again ... they certainly brightened our day!

By the way, if John missed it, I left a birthday greeting for him at the end of my previous post called "Worth Pondering ... Love Is .." Hope he had a wonderful day of celebration! Hugs!

I'm guessing you aren't going to like his movies then. The humor is more intelectual/spoken humor than the slapstick stuff you get in say, "Dumb and Dumber", but alot of Kevin Smith's movies are about slackers.

For you, I would recommend either "Chasing Amy" or "Jersey Girl". I bet you would enjoy those more than the others. If you don't like those, then you will REALLY hate the others ;o)

John probably did miss your post, he doesn't really ever look at his journal or his friends for that matter and I've just been having a hard time getting time at the 'puter lately (hence the lengthy time it took for me to reply to you) but I passed on your happy b-day wishes to him.

More precious tales from the countryside

"In full TX matron make-up" & the description that follows - You can't possibly have penned such a precision-peek were you not from TX. Definitely keep this direction. This + your broadway-baby tales will make the $29.95 more than worth every penny :0)

"TX women of a certain age don't go anywhere without making an effort" - We will never know the full extent of this statement had we not lived in TX :0)

"Thank God you're a country boy", too!

Kevin Smith: Oh, stop bashing the fat people! LOL Well, you described trade-mark Kevin Smith dress and demeanor right there. I'm sure Regis held his own. He can be SOOO good :0) Sigh! If only Kevin Smith was'nt so floppy!... As for his movies, you would laugh your head off in one of your white-bread moments - and we all have those, don't we? But if you DON'T happen to be in one of your white-bread moments, you're likely to go "Ok... Why?"

Lest I get bashed here, I didn't criticize him for being fat, just sloppy and rude. Actually, Regis was dumbfounded ... was at a loss for words at how mean Smith was about Joan Rivers ... I know he's straight, but his comments were bitchy queen.

I think I'm much more likely to go ...ummm ... Ok ... Why? :) I don't often enjoy movies where the characters are just plain stupid or losers. Just don't find it funny ...

You would have loved the sisters and they would have loved you:)
