Critters

Living in the country has its advantages. Among them are peace and quiet conducive to reflection, a introspective person’s delight. We live about three miles from downtown Brenham, but with cattle as our closest neighbors, you’d think we were far away from it all. Our little haven...

I wrote last week about the spider that spit out its prey and the pair of hares (jackrabbits) I could see from the window. (I like glass between critters and me:) Mom did noble battle last summer with a five-foot water moccasin who was sunning itself in her flower bed. It slithered to safety under the concrete of the sidewalk. Yesterday, we followed the path of a mama skunk across our backyard. Our dog, Dixie, went a bit nuts barking, running back and forth, but the only time the huge skunk stopped was to put up her tail when a couple of barn swallows dive-bombed her. I think it’s odd to see a skunk, who’s not rabid, in broad daylight. Later in the day, she passed back through the yard with a baby in her mouth. Perhaps, that explains her urgency to make her journey in the sunlight.

There was no glass between me and the critters I encountered on Friday night. I was helping Mom transplant some bushes. She had gone over to the concrete slab where our water hose is coiled to turn on the hose, when she hollered, “Neil, Come Quick!”. Under the hose were two tarantulas, one about six inches across from furry knee to furry knee, the other slightly smaller. Their egg-shaped centers were about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Ugly creatures ...The tarantulas were aggressive; I managed to subdue them with a strong, hard stream of water and then killed them. Dad killed another one on the other side of the house last night, again it was lurking under a hose. The lesson ... If you’re gardening in this part of Texas and it heats up, wear gloves and look carefully before you pull out weeds or work in the flower beds. There’s critters in abundance. There's a picture behind the cut.

The smaller of the two tarantulas I killed.
The furry legs are shriveled up from the water and it's a bit squashed, but it was a force to be reckoned with.

I’ve been speaking of four and six-legged creatures, but there are two-legged ones who can be dangerous to your visual sensibility:) I drove into Houston yesterday and saw a matinee of “110 in the Shade”. Thanks to my friend Marybelle, I was on the seventh row center for this repeat viewing. I enjoyed it alot more from close up where I could see the faces of the actors more clearly. But the critters I refer to were in the audience. A Saturday matinee audience is like no other. I was by myself, so I had plenty of opportunity to observe the characters out in the house and lobby.

One woman, about 80, had jet black dyed hair. The hair was swept up and over, flipping out about a foot from her face and sprayed into place. (You know, the Ann Miller do:) She looked like a child who had gotten into her mother’s makeup. Application was heavy and haphazard. She was dripping with jewels and leopard skin prints. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her, wishing for my camera:)

A matinee crowd on a hot day is always a grab bag in terms of dress. It’s usually an older audience and they dress up. And then there’s the other end of the spectrum. I understand the need to be comfortable and casual, but some folks take it to an extreme. There was a guy sitting three seats from me with his wife and little boy (who in one of the most tender moments in the show, hollered out, “I don’t get it!”:) The guy hadn’t washed his hair (thinning grey with bangs), was dressed in a stained tee-shirt and grey gym shorts. I’m sorry. I know there are people who will disagree with me, but I was offended. I can see walking shorts or jeans and a casual shirt, but his appearance ... *sigh* ... Critters ... No class ....

I attended the cast picnic between shows and got to visit with several out-of-towners that I worked with a couple of decades ago. It was a nice afternoon. When I arrived home last evening, my Mom was all excited. Turns out they were watching Lawrence Welk repeats as they do every Saturday at 5pm. There’s a current day host who introduces the vintage shows. Yesterday, Mary Lou was interviewing Cissy King who was part of the dance team Bobby and Cissy. Cissy was talking about her work with Six Flags parks and up pops a picture from 1979 .... and there I am, singing and dancing. The show was Tumblin’ Tambourines and I was Sheriff Hardy Ever Do Right. Talk about your dangerous Critters .... *grin*

Randy is Mr. Butch in every conceivable way.

Until a spider enters the picture.

Not long after we moved in together a few years ago, an eentsy, weentsy spider very delicately spooled itself down from the ceiling onto the middle of the bed, right between us.

I didn't know Randy could levitate. Four feet into the air. Screaming like a little girl. "Kill it! KILL IT! KILL! IT!"

Big butch spider hunter that I am, I grabbed a tissue and dispatched the offending creature. (The spider, that is.)

So was born my first official household duty. We've divvied up most of the household chores, so this one has now become mine.

I am The Spider Killer.

Spiders don't freak me, though the pair of tarantulas I dispatched were pretty scary-looking. Mom's just lucky that it wasn't a nest of snakes. She would have been on her own:) LoL!

All Hail Allan, the Mighty Spider Killer!!! HUGS!

Spiders - I admire the amazing way they have evolved and the tricks they do to live, the incredible strength of thier silk.

But I scream like a girl if I see a big one and then run faster than Superman.

I didn't run for one reason. They were crawling on the side of the house getting away. Several years ago, I was laying on the floor of my folks' living room ( a different house), during a visit. From behind the television comes a big tarantula only inches from my leg. I yelped and rolled away. I didn't want to give this couple a chance to make it into our house. So, I chopped one to pieces and squashed the other one with my boot.

However, I would have enjoyed watching you scream and run so fast:)

Hugs!

Ewww. Ick. I so hate spiders, there would have no f***ing way I'd have picked up that hose just to douse it, let alone stomp on it. Now, that said, I'm okay with the smaller variety. Every once in a while, medium-sized, dark brown spiders (don't know the name of it) enters the house. A long time ago, Don happened to have had a drink from Red Robin that came in its own plastic container-- it looks like an hourglass with an elongated neck. I use it to trap and scoop up any spider I see in the house, then, I release it outside. No carapaces and goo to clean!

I was ok with the tarantulas. At least there was plenty of target. I hate the spiders that are smaller that you can see at first. I was bitten by a brown recluse on the back of my leg at the knee joint while I was still touring with "Evita" ... The back of my leg turned to mush and I will have vivid scars fro the remainder of my life ... Luckily, I sought treatment right away. It felt like my leg was on fire ... and I never did see the spider or know exactly when I was bitten!

Btw, it isn't fair ... You're getting to dance with Chip and see so many of my other favorite people. Dang it! *grin*

Hugs!

Un...as much as I am terrified of spiders...I guess tarantulas are not high on the list. We had them all the time up in the offices of Arrowhead Springs (above San Bernardino, CA) especially as the rainless summers would drive them (and the rattlesnakes) down out of the surrounding hills. It may not be a great comfort to know this but their bite is no more lethal than a bee sting (as opposed to a black widow or a brown recluse, which I know one person to have died from)... The problem with their bite is more from infection then venom...and I guess having had friends who have owned them, I don't really freak out (as much) when I see them...

Now, what would really have made me freak would be to see you dancing on stage in 1979... So PLEASE tell me it's only out of shyness that you decided to not include a clip (or a still) of your bit as Sheriff Hardy! That's a dangerous critter I would have been willing to pay to see....LOL

I've never been frightened of spiders unless I've been startled, such as by a cock roach flying at my head. But I certainly don't want them in the house as they try to escape the heat. I am petrified ... unreasoning, unable-to-move frightened by snakes. It's probably my main phobia. No amount of explaining by those who are snake afficienados can make me feel otherwise. AND they are not fun to find in the house, which has also happened to me!

Neil dressed as a cowboy/sheriff would flip you out! LOL! It was my final job before getting hired by Tommy Tune for "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" for which I got my union card. I quit my job at Brown & Root as a technical editor to work at Six Flags for $4.00/hour. I did it for three months, tired quickly of 6 shows a day and begged for my job back at B&R. They gave me the job back and a week after that I got hired for Whorehouse. Funny how things happen ....

I wouldn't know how to find that clip and post it:)

Why did you move from San Bernadino to Florida? I'd like to know more of your history if you're willin'!

Hugs!

Yeah...I'm willin'

From: [identity profile] becker-boy.livejournal.com
If things could be decided upon in terms of just spiders and snakes, you and I would do just fine, Neil. I am totally not afraid of snakes!...and you are pretty good with spiders. Now trust me, I wouldn't do too well with a snake in the house BUT I wouldn't panic either. And just maybe you wouldn't survive down here in Florida where we have palmetto bugs (which for all intents and purposes LOOK and act like very large house roaches). Honest Injun...one crawled across my socked foot just as I was reading your comment about them. I sent him quickly to roach-heaven but couldn't help but laugh at the thought: "Gawd what if Neil and I were on the phone when that happened...I'm not sure he is ready to hear me hit that higher octive yet!" LOL

I moved from San Bernardino not to Florida, but to Columbus Ohio in 1984. The reason behind is nothing to shout about: I was involved with a Christian evangelical organization (as a graphic designer) and I guess because I was beginning to struggle with issues of my sexuality, I decided to leave them (after 7 years) and start anew in a city I was greatly acquainted with. It was one year after my arrival in Columbus that I decided that I was gay and nothing was going to change that fact.

I loved Columbus a lot....had a lot of friends...BUT quite frankly after 8-9 years, the cold weather was getting to me. In 1993, two things happened: my father died in March, leaving me a small inheritance and my bf and I broke up at the very end of December (it was the day he packed his things up and moved to Phoenix). With enough money in the bank to allow me to make the move without having a job first (a cardinal rule of mine) I moved to Jacksonville —and away from winter, in May of 1994.

I haven't regretted the decision to move here, although after all this time (12 years) I still miss Columbus. I will not move back there unless I have a husband who truly wants to move there with me...something about needing a bear man always nearby to warm even up the most gloomiest, sub-zero kind of day. As for San Bernardino, well, you can take it or leave it. The rainless summer days, the smog, even the complexity that is the Los Angeles basin just weren't my cup of tea.

Was this answer more than what you were asking for? (hugs, m'man)

I have no fear of palmetto bugs, but I will yelp when they startle me:)

I've spent a lot of time in Columbus and like the city very much, especially German Village. I just missed you as I came to town with Evita in 1993 and with Phantom in 1995 and 97. (I may have those exact years mixed up.) Do you by chance know [livejournal.com profile] champdaddy? I was hired by American Express to be a financial planner in Columbus in 1999, but withdrew from the job when it became clear that theatre still beckoned.

Jacksonville is an interesting choice for Florida. Did you move there with friends already in place so that you had a built-in network of support? I've only played Jacksonville twice ... 1980 with "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" and in the early 90s with Evita. Funny though .. I made friends with two guys there and our correspondence has lasted 26 years. Do you/did you know Gary and Bernie? Bernie passed away two years ago. Gary was a telephone lineman till he retired a couple of years ago. (I know it's a shot in the dark, but what the hell:)

I'd relocate in a minute for a challenging job; but with one exception, it would have to be a cold(ish) climate. When I consider places/change, I look at Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, DC and maybe SF. I look at them carefully because that is where I have the strongest networks of contacts, friends. If I stay here, it's Houston or Austin for work.

Oh yes, I spent a lot of time in German Village...not living there (let's say I lived there off and on, one night...er, day at a time). Most of us in town called it the the "gay ghetto" actually. My fav places there: Max & Erma's, The Book Loft and that store owned by these two old gay men who were well known by the community (can't recall their names now).

I looked a champdaddy's userinfo and although I like to think that I remember him (woof), alas, I do not. I chose to live in Jacksonville (all the locals call it "Jax") because it and Orlando were the only cities I was familiar with from previous visits to Florida and although there was no network already in place here when I moved here, I adapted pretty quickly. I chose it over Orlando simply because it was closer to the beach (and why move to Florida if not to live near the beach?)

The last musical I saw in Columbus was Le Miz which I saw on my (our) birthday. I do not remember Evita ever coming to town so I guess I was probably out of what I call the musical loop by that time. Wil, the boyfriend in 1993 (the one who moved to Phoenix) was not a musical buff and I guess that meant we probably did other things...

Lunchtime is over...will finish responding to your post this evening.

Ya'know....my email address is beckrboy@yahoo.com. Mayhaps we can continue this in that venue if you are so inclined, dear man.

Part 2....

I knew a Bernie there in Columbus but if you knew your Bernie from Columbus for 26 years and he was with his Gary most of that time, then it couldn't have been the same guy.

I would relocate for a job that paid 50K+ but since in the graphic design field such a job would most cetainly be challenging (to be worth that much), I guess we sorta are looking for the same thing. You would still need a cool clime, eh? I say cool versus cold since I hardly think of SF (or Seatttle) as being icy...which is the kind of cold I speak of that drove me from Columbus. Of all the places you mention, I have never been to Portland or Austin, although I have heard great things about both cities. Was in Seattle last September and with a little luck I will there again this September.

Oh yeah, the two guys in German Village I mentioned in my previous post were Fred and Howard, and I think their store was named after them. Hmmmm, all this thinking about Columbus makes me miss it again. I have the week of Columbus' Pride celebration (the last weekend in June) off at work but don't honestly see how I can get up there for one of the biggest parties in the country. Still, one can still wish.....

Memorial Day is coming up; you have a picnic to go to? Me, I have no plans but probably will go up to Little Talbot...early...for a while.

Hugs to you......

Ther Bernie and Gary I know are from Jacksonville. For 25 years I've gotten a Valentine greeting from Gary. It's an envelope with a heart sticker ... the note inside always reminds me to keep "a heart on":)

As to Memorial Day weekend ... I'm usually working. Last year was a four-show weekend in Toronto, though I did rent a car and drive down to Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls on that Monday. The only Memorial Day I can remember having plans for was in 1997 when I made my one ... and only ... and last ... trip to Bear Pride in Chicago. I love Chicago, but did not enjoy that event.

Portland and Austin rock, as do all of the cities I mentioned. Chicago and Minneapolis fall outside your preferred climate; but outside of Seattle, SF and Houston, the cities where I have the strongest network of friends. AND that's a mighty big factor in any decision I make.

Big Hugs!

Oops...now if I had made a point to READ your post carefully, I would have gotten it right. LOL

Lessee....never met a Bernie here in Jax. BUT an interesting phenomenon here that I never thought about in Columbus: a lot (and I mean A LOT) of long-term gay couples here never have anything to do with the gay community. They have their circle of friends and never venture out to the bars or to the Pride Festival, or get involved in gay-related organizations, and therefore people like me never ever know they exist. I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the conservative nature of the region; it's just easier and more comfortable to only be out of the closet to one's circle of friends and no one else...at least while at home.

Now I'm curious: why didn't you like Bear Pride in Chicago? I'm not sure I would have enjoyed myself either BUT I never been to it, so I can't really say that.

I love Chicago too...especially the museums (never been to Halstead St). The people were always so nice to me, especially when It was apparent that I was lost.

(grinning)

Speaking of critters...

I dispise bees of the flying sort, bees, hornets, wasps etc, now I love the sweet golden goodness that they create but not them though.

Most spiders don't bother me too much and I've killed my share, I just don't want them in my house/apt. Ants, don't want them either in my home. Had to deal with lots of small black ants when living in LA during that fall.

Well, you wouldn't like our front porch. I've knocked down several wasp and hornets nests from the eaves of the porch, inside the porch light, under the arm of one of the rockers ... They are everywhere. We have mounds of ants too ... though not so bad this year. I consider them a nuisance, but not something of which to be fearful.

Thank goodness those things are very rare in East Texas, or I would've died from heart failure at an early age. I can't handle those things (notice I'm not typing that specific word) at all. I have a terrible phobia of them and those things that you see at circuses that rhyme with "drown". I can't type/say THAT word either. If I saw both at the same time, I probably WOULD die. lol

You must have to close your eyes when you watch the Simpsons:) I'm not frightened of the critters, just don't want them around. They did battle for their lives. Snakes are another matter. I am most frightened by men and women with no conscience ... mostly fundamentalists who do bad things in the name of the Lord:) I wonder what that phobia is named. LOL!

Off-topic ... I created an eBay account yesterday as well as PayPal account and purchased my first item on the site. I hope it all goes well, as I don't want to be burned on my first try.

Big Hugs!

ps ...Wish you had seen 110 in the Shade with me. There were only 600 people in the matinee audience and the Hobby seats 2500. They deserved better ... underdressed audience members or not!

I always tell people "if you go to the theatre wear black or the chorus will be bitching about your clothes throughout any out front numbers, and if its a theatre you know and a show you hate but you have to go to, wear clothes the same colour as the seats and the cast will think the back rows are empty"

LOL! Great advice! It was sad that there weren't more butts in the seats. Only about 1/4 full. The show, particularly the leading actors who were splendid, deserved better. The audience was odd ... small ... but jumped to their feet at the end of the performance. The rain sequence to end the show is terrific!

Ummm ... They can have them. I know people have tarantulas as pets, but I think cute puppies are much better:) These tarantulas were by far the largest I've ever seen and very aggressive. Mom was hollering for me to kill them, so I did. We've had them make it into the house ...snakes too .... not fun ... Also being bitten by a brown recluse a few months ago and nearly winding up in the hospital ... I'm not very kindly disposed to spiders right now. Sorry to disappoint your kids ... :)

while living in Austin, of all places, we had bouts with ants, snakes, spiders and even scorpions! but, since i played in bayous and ditches ever since a little lad, they didn't bother me much. there was one night though, my brother placed one of his rattlesnakes in my room as a joke. mind you, it was a PLASTER replica, but was painted and looked like the real mccoy... especially since i was WAY drunk when i got home that one particular night... talk about SCREAMING like a girl! hahahaha

I live in an area that used to be rural. I have seen all sorts of critters over the years. I had a family of skunks move under my house one year. Trying to get rid of them wasn't easy. A pest control company sprayed triple strength termite spray to chase them off. I will probably never have termites again, either. (grin)

I helped chaperone a group of sixth graders on a trip to Six Flags in the late 1970s, though I don't remember the exact year. It'd be funny if we saw you perform.

You most likely went to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. I did the shows at Astroworld in Houston which till it closed last October was part of Six Flags.

We've seen a lot of skunks in the past two years. I took pictures of two baby skunks last summer. We know the mama skunk was roadkill. We think the one we saw Saturday might have been one of the ones from last year, fully grown. I will remember your tip about termite spray if they should ever get under the house.

Thanks for the info!

We did go to Six Flags in Arlington. I had a job interview in Houston several years ago and spent the day touring the town. I toured the Astrodome and the Johnson Space Center. I remember going by Astroworld.

I have seen some dead skunks while driving, but haven't seen any live ones lately. Skunks can get into any opening where they can fit their heads, which is something else that I found out when I had the family of skunks under the house. Hugs back to you.
