Good For More Than Ice Cream
May. 8th, 2006 02:16 pmPlans for the summer are proceeding a pace. I’ve been working diligently on revising both my theatre and business resumes. Through my friend Casey, I’m working with her brother who is a career transition specialist. He’s provided me with resume templates and we’ve had in-depth conversations about how to approach other careers, focusing on the core strengths and skills that have brought me success as a singer/ actor. I’ve just completed my second draft of the business resume ... finally got it down to two pages .. and sent it back to Pete for further review. Next up are cover letters ...
Though I’ve cut sweets out of my diet since October 1, I’ve been picking up a bit of weight. I know what’s happened. I’ve cut out cake, pie and cookies, but I’ve replaced them with Mexican food, french fries and other salty items. So last week, I introduced discipline back into my eating. I’m watching portions and adding more exercise to the mix. Chant with me ... No more fries! No more fries! Choreography in both of the shows I’ve done the past couple of years kept me in pretty good shape, but those shows are done and an exercise decision needed to be made. My choice was to join the Blue Bell Aquatic Center.
The Blue Bell ice cream folks built a beautiful facility a couple of years ago and turned it over to the city of Brenham. There are three pools, two indoor and one outdoor. One of the indoor pools is a lap pool kept at a comfortable 80 degrees; the other is a therapy pool, warmed to 90 degrees, with ramp access, a chair that can swivel and be lowered into the water and conventional stairs. The depth of that pool is 4 feet. The center has exercise classes in this pool for Seniors; a session for folks with Parkinson's Disease and is wonderful for anyone with physical challenges. I took my Mom on Saturday. She was reluctant to go, but had a good time; key was that she left the pool free from arthritis pain for the remainder of the day. Now, she wants to go twice a week. I told her, “I’m there!”
On other days, I’m swimming in the lap pool; I’ve started with half-mile swims and am gradually adding to the distance. It’s nice to be back in the pool. When I was a teen, I was a life guard, Water Safety Instructor and taught swim lessons to adults and teens who had never learned to swim or to children who were particularly fearful. It was rewarding work. As to the environment ... I particularly enjoy the quiet. There’s nothing but the gentle sounds of the water as I move through it. Kudos to Blue Bell Ice Cream Corporation for being excellent corporate neighbors!
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I traded in my truck and ordered a Dodge Caliber. I won’t have it till mid-June, so the dealership arranged for me to drive a Dodge Stratus at no cost. I am grateful for the reprieve from payments. Most of the “extras” I’ve ordered on the new Caliber are standard items for this part of the country. It’s automatic (I never learned how to drive a stick.) and is air-conditioned (a must in this part of Texas); I didn’t get any of the fancy stereo speakers, but I did add one item of interest. I chose to have Sirius Radio installed. It comes with a free subscription for a year. I changed my mind after taking a few short trips recently where I couldn’t access anything but religious programming, Spanish language stations and old rock music. I finally settled on a local Country station, but I find most of this genre’s programming too narrowly focused for my taste. Where are my show tunes?! *grin* So, Sirius here I come!
Though I didn’t leave the house much over the weekend, I did travel around the country through wonderful phone chats with
musicbearmn,
gotmoof,
lovesongman, Aaron, my niece Caitlin, my sister Colleen and friends Bill, Linda and Marybelle and through IMs with some of my LJ friends and old AOL chat buds. It makes for a nice journey and I appreciate the support ... Just like I appreciate that Blue Bell creates more than ice cream!

Date: 2006-05-08 07:53 pm (UTC)I have had my XM satellite radio about a month now and am TOTALLY addicted to On Broadway. Hope you enjoy your Sirius as much!
Re: good for you!
Date: 2006-05-09 02:36 pm (UTC)I'm seeing that several of my friends have XM Satellite. I don't know enough about either XM or Sirius to know if there is a clear favorite.
HUGS!
Satelite radio
Date: 2006-05-08 08:08 pm (UTC)But with corporations buying up stations all over and homogenizing everything, that's gone sadly. However with the advent of tape and now CD, I can listen to what I want, and it'll sound much better than typical FM. :-)
Still, satelite radio, dunno, however satelite/dish TV, well that's a different story.

Date: 2006-05-09 03:09 pm (UTC)Btw, I have access to free tickets for tomorrow or Thursday night's (opening) performances of "110 in the Shade" ... TUTS' offering at the Hobby Center. My friend Marybelle is in the ensemble. Would Mike and you be able to attend? I could ask Marybelle to arrange seats for you and have them held under your name.

Date: 2006-05-09 07:28 pm (UTC)Well, I can say that XM has no gay interest channels, where Sirius does.
You can listen to
lfkbear weekday mornings, and there's even a Bear Show!

I love the NPR and the Broadway channel too. I even find myself listening to Howard Stern every so often.

Date: 2006-05-13 11:01 pm (UTC)By the way, you would have enjoyed the production of 110 in the Shade that I reviewed here in my journal. Really kick ass leads ... It had its problems, but really delivered the goods in the end.
HUGS!
