Plans for the summer are proceeding a pace. I’ve been working diligently on revising both my theatre and business resumes. Through my friend Casey, I’m working with her brother who is a career transition specialist. He’s provided me with resume templates and we’ve had in-depth conversations about how to approach other careers, focusing on the core strengths and skills that have brought me success as a singer/ actor. I’ve just completed my second draft of the business resume ... finally got it down to two pages .. and sent it back to Pete for further review. Next up are cover letters ...

Though I’ve cut sweets out of my diet since October 1, I’ve been picking up a bit of weight. I know what’s happened. I’ve cut out cake, pie and cookies, but I’ve replaced them with Mexican food, french fries and other salty items. So last week, I introduced discipline back into my eating. I’m watching portions and adding more exercise to the mix. Chant with me ... No more fries! No more fries! Choreography in both of the shows I’ve done the past couple of years kept me in pretty good shape, but those shows are done and an exercise decision needed to be made. My choice was to join the Blue Bell Aquatic Center.

The Blue Bell ice cream folks built a beautiful facility a couple of years ago and turned it over to the city of Brenham. There are three pools, two indoor and one outdoor. One of the indoor pools is a lap pool kept at a comfortable 80 degrees; the other is a therapy pool, warmed to 90 degrees, with ramp access, a chair that can swivel and be lowered into the water and conventional stairs. The depth of that pool is 4 feet. The center has exercise classes in this pool for Seniors; a session for folks with Parkinson's Disease and is wonderful for anyone with physical challenges. I took my Mom on Saturday. She was reluctant to go, but had a good time; key was that she left the pool free from arthritis pain for the remainder of the day. Now, she wants to go twice a week. I told her, “I’m there!”

On other days, I’m swimming in the lap pool; I’ve started with half-mile swims and am gradually adding to the distance. It’s nice to be back in the pool. When I was a teen, I was a life guard, Water Safety Instructor and taught swim lessons to adults and teens who had never learned to swim or to children who were particularly fearful. It was rewarding work. As to the environment ... I particularly enjoy the quiet. There’s nothing but the gentle sounds of the water as I move through it. Kudos to Blue Bell Ice Cream Corporation for being excellent corporate neighbors!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I traded in my truck and ordered a Dodge Caliber. I won’t have it till mid-June, so the dealership arranged for me to drive a Dodge Stratus at no cost. I am grateful for the reprieve from payments. Most of the “extras” I’ve ordered on the new Caliber are standard items for this part of the country. It’s automatic (I never learned how to drive a stick.) and is air-conditioned (a must in this part of Texas); I didn’t get any of the fancy stereo speakers, but I did add one item of interest. I chose to have Sirius Radio installed. It comes with a free subscription for a year. I changed my mind after taking a few short trips recently where I couldn’t access anything but religious programming, Spanish language stations and old rock music. I finally settled on a local Country station, but I find most of this genre’s programming too narrowly focused for my taste. Where are my show tunes?! *grin* So, Sirius here I come!

Though I didn’t leave the house much over the weekend, I did travel around the country through wonderful phone chats with [livejournal.com profile] musicbearmn, [livejournal.com profile] gotmoof, [livejournal.com profile] lovesongman, Aaron, my niece Caitlin, my sister Colleen and friends Bill, Linda and Marybelle and through IMs with some of my LJ friends and old AOL chat buds. It makes for a nice journey and I appreciate the support ... Just like I appreciate that Blue Bell creates more than ice cream!

Yes, indeed! We were talking about classy people:) He also mentioned that Mike and you might make it down to see him when he's in DC for the choral conductors conference ... or vice versa ... not sure which:) It was our first phone conversation and I liked his energy very much! HUGS!

good for you!

I need to get back to swimming but don't think I will ever be the fish I was as a youth.

I have had my XM satellite radio about a month now and am TOTALLY addicted to On Broadway. Hope you enjoy your Sirius as much!

I know I won't be the swimmer that I once was as I can no longer dive to the bottom of the pool (a requirement for lifeguards). I can't take the pressure on my ears. However, I found that my strokes are still well-formed and correct (I had a good instructor in Eldred, PA:) and the water feels wonderful.

I'm seeing that several of my friends have XM Satellite. I don't know enough about either XM or Sirius to know if there is a clear favorite.

HUGS!

Satelite radio

I have mixed feelings about satelite radio and part of that is a yearning for individuality of radio stations of yore, where you can tell where you are by what the stations play, that is assuming you can get anything through vast sections of the country, well, way back when... Now, at least in major markets, you can get something at all times, especially on FM.

But with corporations buying up stations all over and homogenizing everything, that's gone sadly. However with the advent of tape and now CD, I can listen to what I want, and it'll sound much better than typical FM. :-)

Still, satelite radio, dunno, however satelite/dish TV, well that's a different story.

I'm drawn to Satellite radio because of the idea that there are no commercials and the programming is uncensored. I'm hoping it gives me a much greater choice in what I listen to ...both music and talk radio. We'll see!

That is nice I'll grant you, not having to deal with the commercials, although there is something about all that patter that goes on between songs, commercial included that to me anyway, gives me a glimps of the area that I may be passing through. :-)

Hope your satellite radio is satisfactory.

Yep! I've been cutting back on all of that ... and at the same time not adding sweets back into the mix. I was proud that I hadn't had but one small piece of birthday cake back in March, since last October. However, I let other areas slip. I'm making progress again since I instituted the new changes 10 days ago. I should just ask myself every time I take a bite ..."Would Curtis eat this?" *grin* I'm sure I'd be lookin good in no time flat:) HUGS!

ps... I'm just going to pick up the phone this week and call you and hope you're not busy:)

I've had Sirius in my car since Christmas 2004 and retrofitted my work truck with it too late last year. While the programming is quite good, the greatest advantage to me is the near total absence of mind-numbing commercials (the only commercials are for Sirius channels). It's also wonderful to being out in the middle of nowhere and have lots of listening options. I suspect you'll get a major kick out of the announcing staff on the Broadway's Best channel (#77 on Sirius). Happy listening!

Since I'm living out in the middle of nowhere ... and there are few options that I like, I think I will enjoy it! I'm happy to hear from someone that has experience with Sirius! Thanks, Rick! Hugs to David and you!

Now, that would be something, wouldn't it?!!! *grin* I can just see me eating my way from one end of the pool to the other:) Hmmm ... That reminds me of a boyfriend I had back in the early 80s and this episode with vanilla ice cream and my fur ... But, I digress ... :)

DirecTV has been broadcasting XM radio for several months now..I love it! It's perfect for parties, too. Rob has been an XM addict since its inception. I'm just waiting for devices to play the new XM Passport. It's a tuner the size of a chip which you can insert into any compatible device (home, car, clock radio) and only pay for one subscription.

I find Sirius to be superior to XM (both are former clients of mine), as Sirius has NPR, and BBC (yes, and Howard). I simply cannot live without an NPR and BBC feed. What vexes me is that the Acura TSX (the car I'll be getting next month) comes with XM, not Sirius, and the subscription is only for 3 months. Luckily, I live in the metro NYC area, so programming (I have access to 8 over-the-air NPR stations) isn't a problem. Although if I want to listen to my own music, there is an integrated iPod hook-up.

Thanks for this vote of confidence in Sirius. It seems like most our friends have XM. I guess it makes me wonder if there is room for both ... or is this going to be like VHS vs Beta Max and one fall by the side? It is a year's subscription that comes with my Caliber and that really covers the cost of the equipment. We'll see how much I like it. The Caliber also comes with the arm to hold the iPod and a plug on the dashboard to plug it in. As I've said already, my favorite item is the fridge/cooler in the glove compartment that holds 4-20 oz drinks! YAY!

Big HUGS, Christopher!

I love Sirius. I've had it for a year and a half or so now, and i love you can just drive with it and not have to worry about the channel fading or hitting commercials on the music channels. Broadway's Best should do the trick, but they can be a little repetitive on the big shows - I'm sure you'll see that more than your average listener. Still, there's many other stations to listen to as well, a greater variety than you'll find on the FM dial.

Hooray for Blue Bell. i grew up on that stuff. Love the Vanilla Bean.

To tell the truth, I thought it was this weekend for some reason. I'm sorry to have missed you ... I didn't leave the house all weekend. *sigh* ... Really sorry ...

Btw, I have access to free tickets for tomorrow or Thursday night's (opening) performances of "110 in the Shade" ... TUTS' offering at the Hobby Center. My friend Marybelle is in the ensemble. Would Mike and you be able to attend? I could ask Marybelle to arrange seats for you and have them held under your name.

BearTalk is a weekly one-hour feature focusing on people and events throughout the Bear community.  It is broadcast as part of the John McMullen Show on Wednesday evenings.  The John McMullen Show is a virtual GLBT Community Center of the Air.  Each weeknight after John's show, Jeremy Hovies plays all GLBT artists and bands with openly GLBT artists on Last Call.  SIRIUS OutQ is Radio That Makes Ya Go GRRrrrrr!

The gay channel is great. (I'm a huge fan of Frank DeCario in the afternoons)

I was a bit undecided, even after I added it to the order on the Caliber. I've gotten such positive feedback that I can't wait to listen to Sirius programming ... and serious programming ...*grin*

By the way, you would have enjoyed the production of 110 in the Shade that I reviewed here in my journal. Really kick ass leads ... It had its problems, but really delivered the goods in the end.

HUGS!
