Alterations, Arrangements and Additions
Mar. 31st, 2006 06:03 pmThe bit where Officer Lonigan is hit over the head with a canvas painting has been altered. No more cuts or whacks for me. Now, the actor playing the artist Appopulous hits himself over the head with his painting out of frustration. The bit's so quick that the visual, no matter who wears the painting, registers and is gone. I am relieved.
I spent hours yesterday researching travel arrangements for my return to Texas post "Wonderful Town". I checked out different options for moving my furniture home, meaning the bedroom set, breakfast bar and stools which had been stored here since May 2004; I also spent hours on monster.com, grantwriting.com and other websites, trying to come up with a plan for my own internet-based business. I have one more paycheck before unemployment. It's stressful to contemplate; the reality will be worse.
I’ve checked out several options with my travel and moving. U-Haul wants $1000 for 8 days for a one-way rental of a small truck from Seattle to Austin (Brenham). The cost doesn’t include gas. Hertz, Avis, National and Budget want $800 to $1100 for a weekly rental of a mini-van. The drop off charge for one way drastically alters the overall cost, as does gas for a 2844-mile drive. FedEx can’t handle furniture the size of my bedroom pieces and Amtrak doesn’t ship furniture ...period. Storage runs $60/month for a 5X5X8 heated unit. I've considered selling the furniture, but sentimental me finds it hard to let it go. The pieces I have here are in terrific condition and they were the first items I bought with my own money after I graduated college.
However, for those who might be interested ... Amtrak does ship boxes, bicycles and musical instruments. It’s $55 for 51 to 100lbs; they offer 8x8 pallets; after the first 100lbs of boxes, it is 42 cents a lb. This might be a very reasonable option if you are moving and most of the contents are in boxes. I still haven’t found a decent and affordable way to get the furniture home. A friend suggested Pods today and I will follow up on that. If anyone has other suggestions I might check out, I welcome feedback.
As to the travel, I found a one-way fare on Southwest Airlines from Seattle to Austin for $89 + tax. Southwest allows you to check in three bags of 50lbs each. I’ve booked the flight. I’ve also made a reservation for a three-day, full-size car rental tied into the flight. I’m going to go down to Portland over the weekend of April 15 to visit my Palm Springs friends who are back home for rounds of chemotherapy. If you remember, they are a May-December couple and Monty, the younger of the two, has cancer. I want to get down there to show my love and support for his recovery before I head back to Texas.
Additions ... Nine of the actors in “Wonderful Town” are also in the 5th Avenue’s upcoming production of “Pippin”. They are rehearsing “Pippin” during the day and performing “Wonderful Town” at night. I got a pleasant surprise last night when I saw the title page for “Pippin”. Above the title, in the role of The Leading Player (Ben Vareen was the original star) was the name Keith Byron Kirk. Yay! Anyone who followed my “Evita” chronicles will recognize Keith as the actor who played Che in the last five and a half months of the “Evita” tour. I had no idea he was coming up here. His was last minute casting. Keith arrives Sunday night and it will be great to see him!
Finally, I had a wonderful afternoon with
lovesongman. Pat and I went to Torero’s on Capital Hill for lunch. I love eating at this restaurant since the owners Sally and Caesar have become friends and the food is delicious.
gotmoof will be happy to know that Pat tried the Cuervo Gold Shrimp fajitas and liked them as much as you did:) Afterward, Pat and I went down to a Western store in Renton and I helped Pat pick out new Western wear. It was a blast and I took hat pictures to share with my LJ friends ... *grin* ... Pat has been a true friend, a delightful companion since I’ve been in Seattle. Lucky for me, Pat’s a friend for life, a permanent addition, so there are more fun times ahead!

Date: 2006-04-01 02:28 am (UTC)It reminds me of when I was in a high-school production of West Side Story. I was one of the Jets. Since most of the boys couldn't dance, the director wanted us to "mock" fight. Unfortunately, a lot of the boys were too rough. I used to run out as late as possible during the rumple scenes. Still, I got hit hard in the mouth once. And I remember taking my shirt off at home during the run and seeing at least 20 small bruises all over my chest. I enjoyed being in the show, but the physical toll was almost unbearable. The director seemed oblivious to it. Fortunately the show only ran four nights.

Date: 2006-04-01 06:14 pm (UTC)Odd that you brought up that show... The 5th Avenue is doing West Side Story a year from now.. I may toss my hat into the ring for the production since I've done the role in a major production. Though, it's mostly Officer Lonigan minus the brogue and a song:)
Glad to see a comment from you! I miss hearing from you! Big HUGS!

I *really* need to take a cold shower.
As for moving large things, have you checked out http://pods.com/ My friend moved from CT to SF using a POD, and it worked out wonderfully.

Hope you can find something soon. If you have read my first post of today, I'm scraping by at the moment still but at least I have money coming in.

Tis easier to get good work when working than it is when not. :-)

Date: 2006-04-01 05:56 pm (UTC)Thanks for the compliments on the hat pictures! Pat and I had fun choosing two new hats, two pairs of boots and two new shirts at the Western store. We managed to get them for what he had expected to pay for one hat. I think he looks mighty handsome in his silver hat!! Now that I look at my picture ... I think with the muttonchops, that I'm a cliche ... hopefully a cute one ... but can we sing, "Whip crack away, Whip crack away, Whip crack away!" Damn! When's that stagecoach arrive? LOL!

Date: 2006-04-01 07:40 pm (UTC)I guess that's a bigger question than what to do with your stuff....do you want to continue to be the travelling thespian, or do you want to go "home" (wherever your heart tells you that is). Decide that for certain and the rest will in time, be settled as well....
Nah...you aren't a cliche in the muttonchops (why in hell are they called that anyway?) and a cowboy hat....as long as it is how you want to look. Although you should have heard me laugh when I read your "stagecoach" remark. Be careful. I remember a few TV shows where that look (yeah a cute one) of yours would be right at home...the question is, hmmmm...lessee...is it Gunmoke, Bonanza or (my fav) The Big Valley?

Date: 2006-04-01 05:48 pm (UTC)I was one whack away from having a broken nose, so I'm happy the bit has been changed. You can see the wound in the photo; imagine that it was twice the size just a couple of days ago. I'm a fast healer.
Thanks again for the update on John. You don't know how much I've come to care about what happens to both of you. Lucky me to have John, Pat and you in my life!

Date: 2006-04-01 05:39 pm (UTC)You know that I feel the same way about our friendship as you do ... I value the sharing of information, feelings, confidances, more than you know. Even better ... we laugh a lot and that's great medicine for both of us!
I'm sure the grey hat, the boots and blue shirt were a hit at the Cuff. You look mighty handsome in them, as you can see by the fun photos we took (though, as Chip says, I look more like an extra on a movie shoot:) I can live with that ... since I was deliberately channeling that for the photo you took:)
I look forward to hearing more details of your weekend ... HUGS!!! As to me ... I've got four shows:)

Date: 2006-04-01 08:07 pm (UTC)Try not to worry about employment and money! Easier said than done but the only thing worrying does is stress people out - nothing else. Just stay calm and focused. Things will work themsselves out. There's a vnmese saying that goes like this: "Troi sinh voi sinh co" - well, with all those accents all over the place, o course. It means: If God made the elephants, he'll make the grass, too. Ok, so the elephant analogy could be touchy with the XXL crowd which, of course, YOU'RE NOT = big print, looking to duck - but you get the jist. Cheer up, Billy! It'll be allright. HUGS!

Eeekies.
Nice to know, but I wouldn't trust anyone in shipping to handle a big ol' hunk of wood and hide glue particularly carefully.
Mr. Jean-Marc might enjoy a train trip, though.

Date: 2006-04-08 06:18 pm (UTC)Better to buy to first class seats on a plane when I'm traveling with Jean-Marc. I load him, he sits next to me, no problems.
Bedroom sets, not so much.
