I love Mondays. When you're working in the theatre, it's often the only day off. After last week's intense schedule, I'm really looking forward to taking off on a day of sightseeing with
gotmoof. We'll head out in an hour or so ...
Lots of odd things happened over the weekend ...first among them ripping out the seat of my police uniform pants. The pants have always been tight through the stride, but they were suddenly very breezy:) I also got the bridge of my nose smashed again, bleeding through most of last night's show. It's no one's fault, but we'll keep adding padding and moleskin to the inside of the hat till we get it right (and safe).
Over the weekend, the streets of downtown Seattle were filled with bizaarely dressed teens and 20 somethings. Come to find out, there was a Japanese Anime convention in town and many of the youngins were dressed as their favorite characters:) Can anyone explain to an old fuddy-duddy what the appeal is? I am drawn to the vivid colorings of the drawings, but when I see the characters, the animation doesn't seem very sophisticated ... just crude and flat ... the stories underwhelming ... What am I missing?
The 5th Avenue Theatre announced their new season ... Among the offerings: the tour of "Bombay Dreams" , "Company", "White Christmas", "Cry Baby", "Edward Scissorhands" (both first productions of new shows), "Camelot" with Michael York as King Arthur and "West Side Story". I'm hoping to throw my hat into the ring for Company, White Christmas and West Side Story. Regardless, none of this work happens until 6 months from now, so I'm really working on other possibilities for near term employment.
So, it's off on a day trip to La Conner with a great friend ... a day of rest and recovery from the rigors of the past week ... The sun's out ... Bountiful ...

Date: 2006-03-27 07:21 pm (UTC)There have been some anime films in recent years that I've found rather cool, like "Akira," "Wings of Honneamise," and the "Legend of the Overfiend" series. But a lot of the anime that's been finding a niche in kids' cartoon programming these days is a little too ... CUTE ... for my tastes. I watched an episode of "Sailor Moon" once and thought I was going to gag to death.

Date: 2006-03-27 11:44 pm (UTC)Akira is cool (and most stuff by Katsuhiro Otomo)
Tokyo Godfathers is cool (and most stuff by Katoshi Kon)
Stuff from Studio Ghibli (like Spirited Away) are good (especially stuff by Myazaki)
In short there is a lot of good stuff.
As for Cosplay (dressing up like a fave anime character) I went to a session on the phenomenon and find that it is kind of like "Paris is Burning" but inclusive of straight kids and requires no voguing skills ;-)
