I love Mondays. When you're working in the theatre, it's often the only day off. After last week's intense schedule, I'm really looking forward to taking off on a day of sightseeing with [livejournal.com profile] gotmoof. We'll head out in an hour or so ...

Lots of odd things happened over the weekend ...first among them ripping out the seat of my police uniform pants. The pants have always been tight through the stride, but they were suddenly very breezy:) I also got the bridge of my nose smashed again, bleeding through most of last night's show. It's no one's fault, but we'll keep adding padding and moleskin to the inside of the hat till we get it right (and safe).

Over the weekend, the streets of downtown Seattle were filled with bizaarely dressed teens and 20 somethings. Come to find out, there was a Japanese Anime convention in town and many of the youngins were dressed as their favorite characters:) Can anyone explain to an old fuddy-duddy what the appeal is? I am drawn to the vivid colorings of the drawings, but when I see the characters, the animation doesn't seem very sophisticated ... just crude and flat ... the stories underwhelming ... What am I missing?

The 5th Avenue Theatre announced their new season ... Among the offerings: the tour of "Bombay Dreams" , "Company", "White Christmas", "Cry Baby", "Edward Scissorhands" (both first productions of new shows), "Camelot" with Michael York as King Arthur and "West Side Story". I'm hoping to throw my hat into the ring for Company, White Christmas and West Side Story. Regardless, none of this work happens until 6 months from now, so I'm really working on other possibilities for near term employment.

So, it's off on a day trip to La Conner with a great friend ... a day of rest and recovery from the rigors of the past week ... The sun's out ... Bountiful ...

You're not a fuddy-duddy; you just have different priorities. You dress up in costume for your job, so it probably isn't interesting to you as a liesure sport. :-)

True ... True ... Maybe that's why dressing up for Halloween or to go to a leather bar don't interest me either:)

My lj buddy Alan ([livejournal.com profile] badrobot68) owns a shop in Pike's Market called The Great Wind-Up. You should check it/him out.

I'll try to do so. I'm only about 8 or 9 blocks from the Market.

Actually there's a soft spot in my heart for anime, because back in the early 1960s, when I was a small child, I fell in love with Astro Boy! He was so cute with his bare chest and those little black briefs. He was my hero!

There have been some anime films in recent years that I've found rather cool, like "Akira," "Wings of Honneamise," and the "Legend of the Overfiend" series. But a lot of the anime that's been finding a niche in kids' cartoon programming these days is a little too ... CUTE ... for my tastes. I watched an episode of "Sailor Moon" once and thought I was going to gag to death.

Ah, but Sailor Moon in the original Japanese is sillier than the cutesy American version (though it is also more girlish, if that is possible) The cool thing is that there are two lesbian lovers in it (Sailors Neptune and Uranus) whose affinity for one another is explained away in the American version (They're cousins!)

The stuff that I don't care for, though it is still somewhat addictive is the toy/game anime; where part of the point of the cartoon is to get kids hooked on a game or line of toys. (Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc)

Hmmm ... I had a crush on Race Bannon:)

So, would it be better to wait until you get back to a Texas address to audition as an out-of-towner, and get the bonuses, or would that make you less attractive financially to the producers?

The better choices are to move to NYC and audition there ... or audition in Seattle and be hired as a local actor. Houston as an address would be a handicap in being hired in Seattle. I would fall into the pool of out-of-towners with none of the cache of being a "New York" actor. Good question, though! HUGS!

I can probably recommend some anime for you ... not all of it is kiddie stuff, and even the kiddie stuff is not usually insulting to a kids intellegence (though it still requires suspension of disbelief)

Akira is cool (and most stuff by Katsuhiro Otomo)
Tokyo Godfathers is cool (and most stuff by Katoshi Kon)
Stuff from Studio Ghibli (like Spirited Away) are good (especially stuff by Myazaki)
In short there is a lot of good stuff.

As for Cosplay (dressing up like a fave anime character) I went to a session on the phenomenon and find that it is kind of like "Paris is Burning" but inclusive of straight kids and requires no voguing skills ;-)

Well, I saw plenty of "Cosplay" this past weekend, including a guy who could be your brother or nephew dressed as a Japanese ingenue:) I do like the style; in fact have a young woman friend who draws very sexy characters; it's just the cartoons I don't get. Thanks for the info! HUGS!

The productions of Edward Scissorhands and Cry-Baby will be new musicals cast in New York. The 5th Avenue Theatre is the first presenter for each. I'm enjoying "Wonderful Town", but it will be over before you know it. We close April 9. The regional productions close just about the time you really figure it out:) Regardless, this is a terrific show and I will miss working with the folks here in Seattle.

Thanks, my friend!! It was a great birthday, highlighted by the visit from [livejournal.com profile] gotmoof and the loving presence of [livejournal.com profile] lovesongman. Tim heads back to Minneapolis this afternoon. Pat's there working this week. You just got back from there. The Twin Cities is host to the best, I guess:) Hope you had a wonderful weekend with your Sweetie! HUGS!

"Camelot" will be cast in New York as a tour and be part of the 5th Avenue Theatre's 2006-07 season. If I'm able to make the call, I'd surely throw my hat in. I did a mini-tour of "Camelot" with Robert Goulet in the late 80s and also a production in CT. I like the way I look in armour, but the tights are a bitch! LOL! HUGS!
