A random act of kindness can turn a day around. I know. It happened to me yesterday morning. As I hurried out the door of my apartment, I did one last inventory of items I would need to have with me at rehearsal and throughout the day. One of the last items I checked was my wallet. Monday, on my day off, I did a lot of walking around Seattle. I had lunch with my real estate friend, George, got well adjusted at the chiropractor (well, as adjusted as I can be:) and then strolled down Pine Street from Capital Hill to downtown and across to Belltown. My final stop was Rite Aid to pick up some drinks.

I paid for my purchases with a debit card, borrowed a pen to write debit on the receipt, threw my knapsack over my shoulder, grabbed the three heavy bags of groceries and headed out the door, juggling the bags the four blocks back to my apartment. I then got the exciting news that my laptop was in town and spent the rest of the evening in front of the computer screen.

Well ... When I checked my wallet the next morning, there were only four single dollar bills in it. I knew I had gotten $20 cash from the cashier at Rite Aid. What happened? I rushed around the apartment checking jeans pockets, coats, my knapsack, even staring at the inside fold of my wallet, wishing the money to magically appear. I decided I had dropped it and hoped that whomever found the bill, would put it to good use. I blessed it and let it go.

However, my route to the theatre goes by the Rite Aid. I decided to explain to the supervisor what had transpired. I told the guy (very cute and Gay), “I know I have no proof, but I think I put the money on the counter, so that I could write on the receipt. The cashier who waited on me last night was Mike. Is it possible to see if his drawer was over for the shift?” The shift supervisor told me he’d look. He came back a few minutes later and said that Mike’s drawer was over exactly $20 and that he’d get the twenty for me. He added, I can tell when people are telling the truth.

Getting the money back certainly turned my day around. With that kind of luck, maybe I should buy a lottery ticket today ... or perhaps just find out if the shift supervisor is single:) In that case, “singles” are preferred.

If you're lucky enough, you should try for the lottery ticket AND the shift supervisor :-D

Sounds like Mike is also a pretty honest guy. He could have easily pocketed the $20 and been in balance with no one the wiser. Definitely buy a lottery ticket today. You're on a winning streak!

I've never purchased a lottery ticket. Winning would make life a bit easier though, I suspect:)

I'm a gonna turn the other direction and wisely say, don't press your luck too much. ;-)

That's the kind of thing I ran into when I lived in that area. I got known in some of the places I shopped/did business with that they know who I was, even if they didn't know my name.

Glad you had that experience and got your $20 back.

Funny you should use the expression ..."Press My Luck". There was a game show 15 or 20 years ago by that name. Yesterday the host of that show and his wife were killed in a plane accident while on their way to a charity mission.

I was very glad to get that money back ... I'm counting my pennies for the upcoming stretch of unemployment.

To my surprise, most of the men who work at this store seem to be Gay ... in their 30s and bearded. I've decided to shop there more often:)

Why not buy a small gift for the honest cashier to thank him?

A good suggestion ... If I don't do that, I will at least seek out Mike, the night cashier, and thank him.

Is that the one at, like, 3rd and Vine? If so, and you buy any deli, check the date!!!!! I don't think they did it on purpose, but I got potato salad there once, and when I chomped down on it, it actually foamed up in my mouth! There is NOTHING quite like effervescent potato salad!

Damn! I've never seen "efferverscent potato salad"! That is the location of the Rite Aid of which I speak. Potato salad foaming in your mouth ... Now there's a picture ...*grin*

We began tech rehearsals today and I just got home at 11:30pm. I'm trying to figure out a time to return your call, but it may be a couple of days. By the way, you were right about losing the beard. I'm now sporting a mustache and muttonchops. Chris gave me a haircut and shaved sections out of my beard this afternoon.

I like it:) HUGS!

Thanks, Chip!

An additional note ... I did go to Bearoke last night for an hour after rehearsal. I told Jonathan that you sent your greetings and he said, "Hello" back with a big happy grin on his face.

Btw, I gave it my all on "You Raise Me Up" and "This is the Moment".

HUGS!

Glad I was able to contribute to putting a big happy grin on Jonathan's face, though in this case I think the messenger had a lot to do with it.

I would luuuuv to hear you on "You Raise Me Up," even if the song is done to death. It's still a good song, and I am not yet tired of listening to Josh Groban sing it. Jessye Normous even has a version she sings in her show. Oy!

hey! have you heard the christian trio Selah do "you raise me up"
aww man, it is awsum! and Il Divo has an Italian(?) version out, too
i put the question mark there cuz it may be spanish (hahaha)

I have not heard Selah's version. I don't have a big budget for recordings these days (if I have an addiction, buying CDs is it, though I dare say I've been practically "on the wagon" for a few years now). As for Il Divo... I've been really tempted to buy their recording(s) but so far I've resisted. It happens that I know one of them: David Miller was one of the tenors in the Baz Luhrmann La Bohème on Broadway, and so I got to work with him. I'm glad to know that he's got some notoriety going in that operatic boy band. :-)

tell U what: i'll make U a CD with Selah and Il Divo and another artist Rachel Balina---all 3 versions are pretty good!

just send you regular address to me:
dbarron@houstongrandopera.org and put bearfuz's address in the subject
i'll make U the cd next week!

I need a song in my repertoire to replace these two songs, but one that similarly packs an emotional wallop ... both musically and in the message. I read [livejournal.com profile] showmeonthedoll's lyrics for his song "Sons and Daughters" in a recent post. They are wonderful! I've asked Ernie if I might have a go at it, but haven't heard back yet. I'm also working on "The Streets of Dublin" from "A Man of No Importance".

i thunk "u raise me up" should be the theme song for the upcoming release of
Titanic II soon to be on the Lifetime (for women and Gay men) channel!

seriously, would luv to hear U sing it Sir!

It may be done ... elevator, ice-skating music, but musically "You Raise Me Up" works for audiences if you sing it well. There's a second verse, which when done, adds to the song. It works best if you cut out one of the numerous choruses. I sang it last April at the AIDS benefit the cast of "Evita" did in San Fran and it went over well. Still, I'm looking for new songs for upcoming auditions ... working my way through the list that so many of LJ friends helped me compile!

Remember you're an actor - the proper way of rewarding someone or trying to chat them up is to give them comps!!!!!

Date: 2006-03-16 06:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mrdreamjeans.livejournal.com
Yes ... But I only get two comps for the entire run of the show and they're for opening night. I've already got friends who are using them ... Our tickets are $66 a piece. I can't afford to buy the good samaritans tickets at six times the amount of the money I got back from them:) I will have to find another way to thank them.

HUGS!

You know why?

The Seattle FD is *much* hotter than the PD. It's a widely known fact ;-).

yeah you're right!

From: [identity profile] tkn1114.livejournal.com
I was'nt thinking about that but you're right: FD is usually much cuter and far more digestible than PD. Do you have pix of Seattle FD? Please post or link. I'll swing by to gawk :0) I should keep up with these things but don't. But I always love to look! :0)
