I often see and hear my neighbors and elder friends discounted because we are seniors … What we have to say is ignored by younger folks who have no respect for experience; at our age, we SHOULD be seen and heard! Well, I want you to know my personal senior discount is never more than 10% off!

I hear and remember every disparaging remark you make, register every side eye glance and recognize when I’m being underestimated. My eyesight and hearing are excellent and my memory is even better! I will not be ignored!

Having said this, give me every senior discount out there! I’m on a fixed income, dontcha know! HA!

I'm guilty of thinking that way myself at times, especially when seniors have disabilities or diminished capabilities. But that doesn't mean they don't have wisdom.

What stands out to me these days is how much I enjoy talking to people of my own generation. Younger folks can be fun—I love talking to my nephews and niece—but people of my generation get it more easily. And those of the older generation seem far smarter than they did a while ago.

I have to fight my impatience with some of my neighbor's ticks. I've lived in my 62+ community for 3.5 years now. Some of my closest friends here are in their 90's. Only recently a couple of them are clearly declining in their cognitive abilities. It makes so sad ... I fight not to get irritated when repeating or explaining myself.

I have a couple of friends who went to the movies. The ticket selling looked to be about 12. She took one look at their white hair and gave the both a senior ticket. They kept their mouth shut and accepted the ticket price even though they were both in their 40s.

I love to pick on the young servers when I'm out at restaurants. I was carded recently when accepting delivery of a neighbor's order at the front desk. Evidently, it included alcohol. I told the delivery person she made my year.

We had some excellent diversity training at my last employer. One especially useful tool was the "power up vs power down" dynamic. Age is a strange one. It's very situational. Some places youth is favored (usually social), and some places age is favored (usually authority related).

And in some settings elders are treated like children.
