Dear Campaigning Politicians:

You don’t know me. You really don’t, but you should. I am one of those rare American citizens who always votes! It’s not necessary for you to spend money trying to convince me to vote. I’m going to anyway and I made up my mind months ago.

I am also one of those American citizens that ignores requests for political contributions. Your “sky is falling” or passive-aggressive political emails might be labeled a “grassroots campaign”, but emails do not motivate me; like I said, I’ll be voting if you don’t spend a dime. Instead, your emails and calls make me irritable and anxious. Unlike you, I am not driven by poll numbers. Face it! What’s the worst that can happen to you? You don’t win. It’s not like you don’t have a career to fall back on; or if you’re up for federal reelection, a lifelong pension and benefits don’t await you. Tell me, how are you going to make my life better?

Here’s a few hints on how to earn and keep my attention:

Wherever you bought my name, get it right!

If I can’t vote for you, don’t ask me for money (no matter whether I agree with your politics or not). Getting asked for $3 in contributions 50 times a day by 30+ candidates for weeks on end is tiresome. It’s still all about the money.

Please tell me what you stand for, not what you or your opponent is against. If you’re running for reelection, tell me what you’ve done that would make me want to keep you in office! Don’t lie!! Don’t make promises you can’t keep. It pisses me off!

The more negative you go, the more inclined I am to give your competition a look.

Offer me ideas and solutions, not rhetoric and hate.

Feel free to throw your campaign funds away on television ads. I mute television ads.

I research your version of the truth.

I vote for an individual candidate, not the party. I must be able to get a sense of who you really are and for what you stand. I try very hard not to be fooled by who your competition paints you to be.

I am an educated voter. I have surprising depths to my knowledge. Don’t underestimate me.

I have a long memory. I voted in my first presidential election in 1972 and every state and local election since.

I covered local politics for a weekly newspaper for years. It was drummed in to me that my articles were to be well-researched, impartial, balanced and truthful. But, I also learned facts are open to interpretation. The media isn’t the enemy in our country and it is insulting to my intelligence to suggest it is! I am a HUGE fan of an independent press!

I am not afraid of people who worship differently than me, of those who worship a different God or no God at all. In fact, if you evoke religious beliefs for any political or social decision you make, I will dismiss you. Politics and religion should not be mixed!

I resent anyone who tries to divide us or demeans other human beings. As citizens, we do not gain by taking away rights from others or diminishing the importance of anyone else’s life.

I do not want to return to the past. I lived it and learned from my mistakes. Let’s move forward in time and in our thinking. We want America to thrive; at least, I hope we all do. I truly want what’s best for my country. I am not cynical about politics, but I see and hear how detached from reality our government officials have become.

We have a president who is an immoral, ignorant, inept and inhumane bully. He’s spent his entire life succeeding by cheating others, by bastardizing the rule of law in our land. He is a fleeting electoral mistake in our country’s hallowed history, not the first mistake in our 200 plus years of democracy and, honestly, probably not our last; but, America should move quickly to remove this destructive presence, this treasonous poisonous slimebucket from our government. His way is not America’s way. Aspire to be the best citizen you can be. Let Americans return with open hearts to what’s possible, to the resounding power of the words, “the land of the free and the home of the brave"!
