I began a journey nearly two years ago. I wrote down a list of wishes for my home in Minneapolis. Once I found a home with no pet regulations, a priority on my list was to get a dog for companionship. I have written extensively about this journey - the frequent visits to adoption/rescue events, weekly visits to a pet store to play with the puppies, combing the websites. I've constantly debated the breed of the dog, the size, the age, the cost.

As with everything I do, I don't assume I know everything ... or what's best on any topic; I seek advice and suggestions from my friends. It sounds like I only make a decision by consensus, but that's not true. I usually know what I want, test it and come to an informed decision. Sometimes, that means returning to my first thoughts/assumptions.

My search for a dog began with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel breed. From there, I researched buying from a breeder; the in's and out's of adoption/rescue and finally looked at puppies in stores. All options ran from $350-$2500 and few if any to be rescued. My primary concern was being able to afford a dog ... for better or worse ... in sickness and in health ... till death do us part. Can you guess I take this seriously? LOL!

So, I expanded my reseach to other breeds. After much pondering, I realized I was most drawn to smaller dogs that didn't shed a lot or drool. Well, tonethbone cut through all of this endless deliberation in a comment to one of my recent posts and said, "Neil, just do it!" Well, Tony, I have!

Let me introduce you to GEORGIE. Georgie is a 22lb, 10-year old pure bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who is unexpectedly coming to me. Isn't he a handsome little guy? (I have never been able to post a photo here. Very irritating!!!!)

The day after Tony made his comment with which I totally agreed, (I was tired of going around in circles.) an old friend I hadn't seen in 30 years called me out of the blue. Maggie and I performed together in the National Tour of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" in 1981. She has a dance academy in Sweetwater, TX and knew of my search. She actively works with the National Mill Dog Rescue in Colorado Springs, CO and has 9 rescue dogs in her home. Georgie had been adopted by a friend of hers two years ago from this organization. Tragically, this woman passed away last week; she died while on her couch and Georgie was discovered clinging to her. Maggie thought of me in terms of re-homing the little guy and I am adopting Georgie. Maggie tells me he's very food motivated; she has filled me in on his medical needs and I'm ready to take on the challenge. We've had several Facetime chats and she believes my home is perfect. I believe we have a match.

Georgie is currently staying with Maggie. My plan, since I am not going to fly down on a plane and return with him in cargo (he is too large to travel under a seat), is to drive to Texas on Memorial Day Weekend and pick Georgie up in Fort Worth at Maggie's daughter's house and return to Minneapolis with him. Maggie will drive the 3.5 hours from Sweetwater to Fort Worth. Evidently, Georgie loves to ride in the car! Hope so!. I AM THRILLED! I can't wait to say, "Hey here, Georgie Boy!"

Our current dog is a re-home. He settled into our lives very easily. I hope that your experience goes well, too.
