Despite six inches of snow yesterday, I was out the door early and met my friend Jason Byran for a delicious breakfast at The Colossal Cafe and then a matinee showing of "Coco", the Pixar/Disney film with its roots in Hispanic Culture, specifically the Day of the Dead. The music is by the husband/wife team, the Lopez's, who wrote the music for "Frozen. The film is charming, touching, culturally on point and rendered beautifully. It is the first film, nominated for an Academy award this year, I've seen. Who knew actor Benjamin Bratt could sing?

The Riverview Theatre was packed with families who braved the cold and snowy weather. At a key point in the movie, the audience was silent. Out of the dark, a four-year old suddenly yelled out, "I get it! He's dead ... Dead, Dead, DEAD!!!" The resulting titters from the audience broke the tension of the somber moment; but yes, little girl; the character was indeed dead. You grasped the concept. I enjoyed "Coco" a lot despite the huge number of restless children!

On my list remaining to see are: The current Star Wars film; "Thor: Ragnorek"; "The Post"; "Ladybird"; and "Call Me by Your Name". It may take awhile, as I usually wait until a film reaches the $2 theaters which can take some time if the film is a critically acclaimed or award-winning movie like the ones I've named.

After "Coco", Jason and I went our separate ways. I got home at 3:30pm (having taken a wrong turn and winding up driving through downtown Minneapolis) and immediately shoveled my sidewalks. It's snowed a bit more, but I still think it was better to mostly clear the walks when it was 15 degrees F than tomorrow when the high is 7 with a windchill mostly below zero.

I read a response from a Postal Worker in our neighborhood facebook group to a complaint about mail not being on time. It appears in our zone alone, five carriers are currently injured, duties being split and routes altered, because homeowners have not cleared their sidewalks and the carriers slipped or fell. I chat with my mail carrier at least once a week. He's capable, reliable and professional. We've discussed delivering mail in Winter conditions such as we have here in Minnesota. He's quite philosophical about it. I don't think I would demonstrate such grace if I had to deliver the mail. It's important to clear those sidewalks and follow the rules that are in place.
