When I travel, I find some of the most lasting memories emerge from listening to show tunes. I left Minneapolis at 11:45am Wednesday morning after sharing a delightful breakfast with six friends at The Colossal Cafe in Minneapolis; as our get-together concluded, Joel and Scott handed out candy canes and Christmas cards to the other members of our group. The camaraderie prior to kicking off yet another 1200-mile solo drive to Texas was most welcome and energizing. Thanks, guys!

I haven't stopped often this trip, only for gas and a regular stop at The Amish Country Store in Lamoni, Iowa (pronounced La-Mo-Nye). I became very focused at dusk, listening to Sirius Radio’s Broadway Channel, driving along in the dark, especially aware of the powerful musical story-telling keeping me company while vaguely aware of faceless travelers in the cars around me. Headlights intermittently illuminating me, I let Dorothy Collins draw me into the weary sadness of “Losing My Mind” from “Follies”. Song after song, I was captivated by the enduring performances. I felt happy.

I arrived at my hotel in Overland Park, Kansas at 7pm and settled in for the night. It was the first time I booked through hotels.com and I was quite pleased. My very cozy room, had an especially comfortable bed with excellent pillows, a must! I will stay there again! I was in bed by 9:15pm and slept soundly, actually better than I do at home.

I hit the road again at 9:30am only stopping briefly to gas up. Like yesterday, the Broadway channel played several selections that touched me deeply: Donny Murphy singing “Loving You” from “Passion”; my friend Raul Esparza singing “Being Alive”, my primary audition song until I was too old for the character; Kristin Chenoweth singing “A House is Not a Home” from “Promises, Promises”; Judy Kuhn singing “Day after Day” from “Fun House.”

I heard no Audra McDonald selections in eight hours of driving today which is odd. I was surprised some selections didn’t hold up to repeated listenings. I’ll be discrete and not call out the shows or the writers. Whenever that happened, I switched to the traditional Christmas music channel.

My favorite singers included Angela Lansbury, Kristin Chenoweth, Judy Kuhn, Marin Mazzie, Liz Calloway, Barbara Cook, Brian Stokes Mitchell, John Raitt, John Cullen, Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. Can you guess my age? LOL!

Is it odd that when tenor song selections play, I’m not nearly as impressed? I sort of compete with the vocal. LOL! Yes, I have been singing along for 900 miles.

For the first time in years, I didn’t encounter any traffic in Dallas. I arrived at the home of my friends Coy and JohnPaul Tow at 5:30pm. I’ve driven 900 miles in 15 hours over two days. I’m making record time! I’ll stay here tonight and hit the road tomorrow for Austin and Christmas with the family.

Some very moving music in there. I'm sure the hours sped by! (and that wasn't meant to be a pun)

I know that Guncle (or Gruncle) Neil will be in hog heaven again with his babies!
