Merry Christmas Morning! I'm sitting in my hotel room in a residential area near Dupont Circle in Washington, DC. As I turn my head to the right, I'm looking out the window at a horizon of grey skies and shingled roof tops. I'm savoring the peaceful quiet, appreciating the time away from the show. On December 26, the rest of the cast will arrive; and since the cast of "Wicked" is also staying here, I suspect the silent hallways will soon be a memory:) At noon, I'm joining my friends Henry and Geoffrey at their home in Arlington where Henry's prepared Christmas dinner; later, we plan to see a movie, though we're split between "Pride and Prejudice" and "King Kong":)

I've been working with a lovely dancer, Nikol Wolf, since this summer in Atlanta. Nikol's skills as a performer are astonishing and her spirit matches. Yesterday, at each of our spots in the dressing in Newark was an envelope. Inside was a poem printed on exquisite paper. The poem is by Nikol. I love her words and touching message so much, that I've asked and received permission to share them with my friends here on Live Journal. I believe the poem deserves a larger audience. So, in honor of Christmas and our touring family ...

Greater Than the Sum

Pages lay open
instructing the soft guitar
encircled by farewell tears.
Green sings blue in hopes she will forget.

Pockets empty in support of hurried flight
empathy manifested in a simple hug
to send a son home.

Buzzing phones
soft mesh bags
and pins forming pathways to and from
sockets,
baskets,
hangers bearing the weight of comforting gray.

Under metal and over light curtains
a synergism takes hold,
tying each flag and ticket
in nexus.
A group of like things
A group in reciprocation of duties,
of kinship,
sharing space ....

All elements of a definition
so valued and celebrated
in glitter, canes and evergreen.
A unit usually defined by your veins,
your features,
can also exist through symbiosis,
through vulnerable songwriting,
late-night beach walks,
and a creative tree-skirt.

This alliance of hotels and bus stops.
This, my mettle,
My family

Merry Christmas, NW 2005

What a beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing it. It is just what the doctor ordered this morning.

I'm beyond bummed that I missed you while you were in New Jersey. I hope you'll give me a raincheck for a future visit.

Merry Christmas, handsome!
