Professional Numbers
Nov. 27th, 2005 09:40 amI've taken a lot of teasing over the years about my interest in stats, but somehow or the other I've always kept track of the number of performances I've done of certain shows, mostly the tours. Today's performance of "Evita" has a key number attached to it. I finally tie the number of performances I did with "Phantom". Here are the professional numbers according to my count:
"Evita" - 1528 performances over 9 productions, five of them tours ... between 1991 and today
"The Phantom of the Opera" - 1528 performances - four years in the Music Box Company - 1994-98
"The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" - 810 performances - touring from 1980-82 - directed by Tommy Tune
"Jesus Christ Superstar" - 270 performances - three productions, one a tour in Europe, one a mini-tour in the West (three cities) - 1989-91
"Mame" - 224 performances - three regional productions and a national tour, all starring Juliet Prowse - 1989-1990
"Camelot" - 128 performances - two productions with Robert Goulet; dinner theater in CT with David Holliday - 1980s
"Fiddler on the Roof" - 112 performances - one regional production and as a replacement in a National Tour starring Herschel Bernardi- 1977, 1982
The following shows I've done between 50-100 performances of each:
"Sweet Charity" - summer stock in Ohio - 1985
"Damn Yankees" - Seattle - 2003
"Man of La Mancha" - Seattle - 2004
"Showboat" - Houston Grand Opera - Houston and Cairo, Egypt - 1988
Whenever I'm weary of the road (and that's a lot of the time lately), I count the numbers. It reminds me how fortunate I've been and that my goal in the business has always been to be a successful working actor. I can partially measure success by the stats; but those numbers also remind me of the people I've met, the sights I've seen and the experiences I've had. By that standard, the road becomes a much friendlier place. Friends, I find motivation in the professional numbers. Today is a struggle, so I'm counting .....

Date: 2005-11-27 03:45 pm (UTC)I am so envious of what you're doing. You're exactly where I want to be and where I will be if I can figure out how to get there.
Congratulations on your Evita milestone. The tour ends soon, doesn't it?

Date: 2005-11-28 04:02 am (UTC)Don't sit on the sidelines. Go after it if you really want it! Get involved in musical theater in any way you can if you're not already. It's a good way to meet people who can help your career along the way and you can gain confidence through experience. Besides, when a show comes together and it's terrific, there are few things in life more satisfying and fulfilling.
HUGS!

Date: 2005-11-27 03:56 pm (UTC)Now out of all of those different shows, how many days were you not able to go on due to illness? (just out of curiosity)

Date: 2005-11-28 04:12 am (UTC)"Best Little Whorehouse" was another story, my first tour. I missed a month due to a mild case of hepatitis in 1981 and several shows due to a knee injury. Two items come into play. Usually on a National Tour if you don't use sick days you get them paid out in cash. It's incentive to be there when motivation is lacking. (Not the case on this show.) The other item is a simple thing .... I don't like anyone to go on for me. I love what I do.
speaking of teasing!...
Date: 2005-11-27 04:05 pm (UTC)seriously, though, I'll start worrying when you start tallying the number of seats in each theater you've performed :>
Keep up teh good work!

Date: 2005-11-28 04:16 am (UTC)ps... I've never been accused of being a Dustin Hoffman, more like a Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy. *grin*
4600 peformances or 12.6 YEARS

Date: 2005-11-28 04:19 am (UTC)I did figure, that when this tour ends February 12, 2006, I will have spent 599 weeks on the road since 1980. I must need my head examined. LOL!
The applause if nice, but actually the process of performing the material and doing it well is what keeps me going ....
I appreciate the support!
Astonishing.
Date: 2005-11-27 07:28 pm (UTC)I remember when I was back in college, and I went to see "All That Jazz" at a local movie theater. And when I walked out of that theater, there was only one thought in my mind: I WANT TO BE A DANCER.
Well, not with my build.
Re: Astonishing.
Date: 2005-11-28 04:26 am (UTC)As to movies and television ... I've danced in a couple of movies, done a few commercials, but my heart has always been in stage work. I live for LIVE theater:)
As to your goal of being a dancer in college ... I never had the build for a dancer either which is why I was hired as a dancer for many years. The artistic staffs loved having a big guy who could move. It often gave me an edge in casting. My nickname in college, The Dancing Bear, didn't materialize out of the air. *grin* I know I got the role of a football player in the National Tour of "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" because Tommy Tune was determined to have men who looked like athletes, not dancers. Of course, back in those days, I looked like an athlete. LOL!
Congratulations

Date: 2005-11-29 03:56 am (UTC)I'm weary of the road, but I also understand that part of my slump last week was being away from my loved ones on Thanksgiving, particularly since it was also my folks' 54th anniversary.
Hope you're doing well! HUGS!
Show must go on
Date: 2005-11-29 06:38 am (UTC)Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for?
Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore...
The show must go on
The show must go on
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stay on
Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance!
Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning, I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning round the corner now
Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free
The show must go on!
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly, my friends!
The show must go on!
I'll face with a grin
I'm never giving in
On with the show
I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
On with the... show must go on!

Does this about do it for you? :0)
PS: That txfurrbear in the tux kinda cute, huh?
