I was reading one of ibearius' posts today where he was talking about leaving home at a young age with just a suitcase and a one-way bus ticket. That made me think of a song from the musical "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" where the madam is talking about her past... leaving home because she didn't conform to her parents' rules, escaping from emotional and physical abuse. She had different dreams for a different success. It is a lovely ballad called, "Bus to Amarillo".

I then think about my friends who are now auditioning for the role of caregiver/caretaker with their aged parents and the minefield of issues and emotions that creates. I know my experiences with this subject have filled my thoughts and this journal this summer and since my Dad's stroke in 2002.

Then a reminder from an unexpected source hit me up side the head with its common sense ...

In today's column, Dear Abby was answering a letter from a single young woman whose parents were criticizing her for not taking on the traditional "married with children" role they expected of her. In fact the mother told her daughter, "If you really love me, you'll find a man to take care of you."

The woman is very successful in her career, well-off and wants to get a graduate degree. Her parents were blocking her from using money for graduate study that she had earned as a teen.

Abby got it right in her answer... She said, "You weren't put on earth to make you parents dreams come true.... They should thank their lucky stars that you are self-supporting and motivated to do even better."

Isn't it too bad that more parents can't see beyond their own limitations in thinking and experience and love their kids unconditionally. There would be fewer one-way tickets out of town....
