Home on the Range
Apr. 20th, 2004 10:46 amMy friend David Earl Hart and I went to the movies yesterday afternoon on our day off. I hadn't been to the movies in several months and was in the mood for something light-hearted, entertaining, mostly a couple of hours diversion. No "Kill Bills" or "The Passion of Christ" for us. We had intended to see "Connie and Carla", even if it looks like a rehash of Victor/Victoria with costumes by "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", but there wasn't a showing at the theatre in downtown Seattle where we were rendezvousing.
We decided we would leave our adult selfs behind and see "Home on the Range". Let me say in advance that I like country music, I'm from Texas and I like silly puns:)
So, how was the film? It is not innovative like the Pixar films, but was fun and entertaining. The voice work was well done by some - Jennifer Tilly, Judi Dench and Roseanne Barr. Roseanne Barr as the voice of an obnoxious cow - not too much of a stretch:) Estelle Harris was cute as a "sky is falling" chicken; Randy Quaid, as the villain and Cuba Gooding as the egotistical horse lent less distinguished vocal work.
The animation was nice; the score by Alan Mencken I enjoyed enough to buy the CD after seeing the film yesterday. It's a Western Swing pastiche with excellent vocals by KD Lang and Tim McGraw, among many.
Again, if we hadn't all seen "Finding Nemo", "A Bug's Life" and similar films, I think that "Home on the Range" would have been better reviewed. Something in the story-telling just misses, but I suspect that if some of the Pixar films didn't exist, that this film would be more of a hit.
It is a simple story - The roles of the heroes and villains are clear. It borrows from many of the TV cartoons that came before it, almost enough to be a salute to them. At the end, the 4 year olds in front of us applauded nearly as loudly as David and me:) It's old-fashioned Disney, elevated by the music and voice work. A pleasant diversion....I can't wait for the lunch box:)
I joked with Tim (BarakSF), that I would rate the film in Moofs:) After all, cows save the farm. He's got to like that. Is "Home on the Range" moofworthy? I rate it 2 to 2 1/2 Moofs.
