I was watching one of the local morning programs and they were doing a feature on Spam. Now, I've driven past the plant in Minnesota where Spam is made; I have friends who love to eat the product; but, I'm too aware of its contents to eat it myself:)

Here's the recipe of the day: Take Spam, divide it into slices and fry it. Take cooked steamed rice and pack it into the Spam container, so that it takes on the form of the can. Slice the rice. (It will fit the fried product exactly.) Wrap it in seaweed and you have Spam sushi. They also mentioned single, shrink-wrapped slices are available for those who would like to eat their Spam while they're commuting. Ummm ... I don't think so! LOL!

I love SPAM... and that is not just because of growing up near Austin, MN. One of my faves is to fry up slices of SPAM and eat it as a SPAMburger. Even grilled SPAM and Cheese sandwiches are yummy.

I do miss the old containers that included the little "key" to unwind the package open... ahhhh memories.

One of my favorite dinners as a kid was fried SPAM slices with mac and cheese - YUM!

Man now I have a sudden urge to get a can and make some spammiches for lunch! Because, you know, I like diarrhea and don't want to wait for it! :P

Yep, I'm going to join the chorus!! Spam rocks. I have many reasons but I'll give you my two...

I once got a bonus at work (which was just down the road from Austin, MN - home of Spam) so I bought stock in Hormel. Once, later, I desperately needed cash to buy a condo in California. Sold my spam stock for a tidy profit and bought the Condo That Spam Bought.

When I was little, one of our best family dinners was Spam. Mom would take it out of the can, into a pan, cross hatch it just like a ham and even add cloves! Then glaze and bake. Loved it then. Love it now.

You need to be a little more open minded about your processed meats, honey.

I'm not saying it is the healthiest of foods, but those of us that were born to depression era parents probably had spam as one of our first solid foods. My mother did not serve it often, but found many ways to prepare it when she did. It was one of those things she knew everyone but my father would eat with no complaints. The last time I had it was when we were in Maui a couple of years ago. Spam is nearly religious stuff over there. Ingredient by ingredient it is hardly any worse than other processed foods and probably better than most.

Yum, I LOVE Spam! I actually have one of those single-serving packages of it in my cupboard as I type this. I like to cube it and scramble it with eggs. And it is AWESOME mixed with mac and cheese!! Hugs!

I should NOT have read that while taking a sip of my soda.

Now my monitor is all brownish-spewy!

You KNEW I'd have something to say about this!

I'm sorry, but "spam" is not edible. Its neither food or tasty. It is, in fact, disgusting.

Why anyone would ruin perfectly good rice or food by combining it with that shit is beyond me.

I don't think I have ever actually had Spam. I should try it. After all, I might like Spam-a-lot!

That sounds even more exotic then the bacon sushi we used to make at Orphan Andy's when we would get bored . . .

Spam Musubi is what Spam sushi is called. There are many Hawaiian restaurants around here, and they all serve it!

[livejournal.com profile] qbear loves it!

I couldn't remember the exact name. "Musubi" .. I knew it was a Hawaiian treat. Thanks!

It was all part of a story on the increasing interest in Spam as an affordable meat during this shaky economy. I have a lot of friends who like it, but it's not for me:)

It appears to be a standard in Hawaiian restaurants. I'm sure I won't ever taste it. No even a sushi fan, let alone Spam Sushi.

I was thinking of you when we touched down, wishing I had a moment to visit. We just stopped for about 20 minutes and didn't switch planes.

Rehearsals are going well; I've got a second show lined up as you know. I've also been approached about two others. So, we'll see ...

HUGS! We will meet!

LOL! Nope! I'll be the person turning green sitting next to the person eating a slice of Spam on the #17!

WOW! Bold and caps! LOL! I don't know the answer to the question you pose. I only report on the 7 am feature on Spam Sushi. See, I find the seaweed part iffy too! :) By the way .. I don't remember the answer to this .. Have you actually eaten Spam in any form? I haven't.

My parents were born during the depression. Mom won't even eat bologna or hot dogs, let alone Spam. She actually knows how they are made:) The report I saw this morning emphasized the Hawaiian connection. I don't think I could eat it, since I pretty much only eat only certain cuts of beef, chicken and turkey. I'm a bit fussy that way.

Love the connection you have with Austin, Minnesota. Now, your brother's in Austin, Texas:) Looks like Hormel did right by you!

As to processed meats .. I've never been one to like lunch meat, etc .. When I was a kid, I was so fussy, my mom would make me ketchup, mustard and pickle relish sandwiches and I'd pretend there was a burger! LOL!

Mmmm ... SPAM ...

Here’s one of my favorite Spam recipes:

Chop a block of Spam into half-inch cubes and brown in a skillet. Open a can of pineapple chunks and drain the liquid into the skillet. Add your favorite brand of hot sauce to taste. Cook until the liquid has been reduced to a more thickened consistency. Add the pineapple chunks and heat through before serving over steamed rice.

Good heavens, if I worried about everything that went into the stuff I eat, I probably wouldn't eat much at all. Look at the list of ingredients in a loaf of Wonder Bread next time you're at the grocery store.

Thats funny.
Our local news did a story on SPAM yesterday too.

And count me among the people who like SPAM. I think it is one of those things that depend on your childhood. My mom served it all the time. Grill it up and serve it on a bun like a hamburger.

I agree. The most exotic thing my mother served was dried beef out of a can. I have no pretense about this. I'm not an adventurous eater. I don't eat Sushi, so Spam sushi seems even more out there:)

Austin, MN (and the plant in Sacramento) are raking in the profits. This might be the stock to buy in this recession:) I'm not dissing the product. It's just not something I would ever eat. If you look at the comments ... it's like 22 for and 1 against:) Most read as a valentine to Spam.

Yep. I love Spam Musubi, too!

I grew up on the stuff. Fried Spam and eggs with garlic rice is just one of the comfort foods for breakfast-- or anytime! Grandma used to make it when my siblings and I were kids.
