The Dog Days of Summer Have Set Me Free
Aug. 9th, 2019 07:36 pmFor most of my life, August has been slow month; I often felt caged, hiding from the sun, simply enduring the month until the heat was gone and my favorite Autumn season arrived. This particular August is proving to be the exception due to terrific friends and a goal of saying yes to social outings.
August 1st, as noted previously, I saw "42nd Street"; August 4th was the Polo for Philanthropy fundraiser; yesterday, (August 8) featured a wonderful brunch and catch up with my friend Michael Hollmen. He's seeing tremendous progress on the re-siding of his Minneapolis home! He also has a condo and art studio in Orlando which I hope to visit some day. Later yesterday evening, I attended Adult Night at the Minnesota Zoo with thespian15. It was spectacular weather and so enjoyable.
Today, I had my annual skin cancer screening. Not too bad. One spot is being biopsied and two spots were frozen. August 10th, I'm seeing Gloria Gaynor with Jon. We've become each other's event buddy. We've already got tickets lined up for April 2020; August 13th is "Floyds" a new play at The Guthrie and on the 17th, the musical group "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy" at The Dakota, all with Jon.
I also have three family birthdays in August that I'll celebrate through gifts, phone calls and singing - Conlee (6 on the 17th), Colleen (64 on the 19th) and Caden (1 on the 20th). In addition, I've been working my regular part-time job. The Minnesota State Fair begins August 22nd. I look forward to attending every year! I hope to rendezvous with Jon, Val and MyJeff at the State Fair if the dates work out.
The frosting on the cake of this exceptional month is the final day, August 31st, when I fly to Norfolk, VA to visit Mark and Brett Cook-Snell and hopefully get to Colonial Williamsburg over Labor Day weekend! This is one August to look forward to ... Remember those airline ticket vouchers from my travel woes back in April? This is how I'm using them ... to visit an old friend from early LJ days, redbearmark, who I got to know in person through touring. I am really looking forward to meeting his husband! I've been a supporter of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation going on 40 years! I totally support their "living history mission"! I was 7 years old the first time my folks took us there.
