Slithering Surprise!
Jul. 21st, 2005 07:26 pmMom just got a nasty shock. She was weeding around the trees we planted in April; she turned back toward the house and there, within two feet of her, was a snake. The snake was about five feet long, dark brown with distinctive orange diamonds along the top of it, the diamonds were thinly outlined in white. I heard her yelp and shout for Dad to bring a hoe from the basement. I hurried to the porch to see what I could do (with camera in hand, of course).
Mom was fighting the snake with a broom. It had its head elevated, but was actually trying to escape Mom's vigorous efforts by the time I viewed it. Mom was trying to steer it away from disappearing into the dense plumbago in her front flower garden....and to tell the truth chop it in half. Just as I pointed the camera and Dad arrived with the hoe, the snake slithered under the concrete sidewalk. There's a gap under the sidewalk due to subsidence and it disappeared.
Damn! I hate nasty-ass snakes! I'm proud of Mom though. She's still shaking, but she held her own despite her fear. Not many women would have battled a dangerous snake , defending the honor of her pristine flowerbeds:) Seriously though, I think the snake's a copperhead and I just hope that we don't have a nest of them underneath our porch steps. Arrrgh!
