A Powerful Sentiment
May. 23rd, 2005 11:33 pmThese words hit me with force. They are from an unusual source, a fantasy novel which I just finished reading. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised at the impact they have on me, but I think the sentiment is meaningful and I didn't expect to find them expressed by the lead character in tonight's read.
"I don't know what it's like to lose someone you've chosen to love rather than someone you're born to love, like a mother or father, but when Dad died I felt like I'd been robbed of time."
-from The Cry of the Ice Mark
I haven't lost a parent or partner, but I lost my best friend 8 years ago and I still mourn her, think about her every day. I feel deeply when "loss" happens to my friends. I seldom have words for the people I care about when they lose a loved one, but I can only imagine that this character's words ring true. Death of a partner or parent must feel like being robbed of time. I've always referred to hearing of such a loss as having my shadow stepped on, but I think this is more profound.
Hugs to my friends and loved ones.... I'm missing you tonight....
