Do you have a tribe?

I ask you to examine your life and identify your tribe. Do you have a big family? Do you have a large social network? Do you have people who meet up regularly? Do you have people who would do ANYTHING for you?

I have always had a small tribe. I was an only child so there wasn't a large family for gatherings. Over the years my father's family is died off and only cousins remain but they have started to create their own family tribe. They don't seem to check on me very much or include me very much.

As Big families have become the exception there are more people with fewer tribes. We have to make our own tribes. I have to create my own tribe.

What does that mean?

End of an era

For over a quarter of a century I've been going with my friend Arleigh every Saturday to various used and new bookstores. It's been a fixture in my life. But my friend is moving up to the Pacific Northwest in a week, and so today was the final bookstore run.

I'll miss him, and I'll miss the regularity of bookstore visits every week. Time passes, things change.

Gays and Tribes

I want to start a discussion about this. Before we get started Please watch and read to get some context about this.

Please also read this section The Baliocene Apocrypha.

I am not crossposting this to LiveJournal because of their new policies.

These two pieces made me think about my world and how I fit it. Where I'm going with this is that I am feeling lost. I have lost my tribe. I am an only child and now that my parents are gone, I don't neatly fit into a tribe. For a while the Bear Club was my tribe but I feel disconnected from that.

The basic premise of the Baliocene Apocrypha article is that the Roman Catholic Church broke up tribes because it was to their advantage.

I now find myself in search of my tribe. I'm not sure exactly what I did to get disconnected but it happened. My mens group isn't acting much like a tribe. They come together for their meetings but that is the only time. The bears are acting exactly the same way. I think modern society is working overtime to disconnect tribes. We have put social systems in place but the only feedback one gets is a "Like". There is no true connection.

Tribes today are some weird hybrid. They don't jointly own things as tribes of old did. They have no reason to take care of their tribal members even when there is some call to do. Since we don't work together, jobs pull us away from tribal identity.

A tribe is part of our identity but it is their duty to check in with me as for me to check in with them. I get that as a Gay man I may be part of the Social Glue for my tribes but I feel that no one is seeing my value or checking in with me.

Please think about this. In the mean time, Call someone in your tribe and check in.

First I was afraid, then I was Hooked on a feeling.
I saw the Rains down in Africa with my wayward son.
I hung out with Pickers, grinners, lovers and sinners.
And I will Always love you.

It's just a jump to the left by the dashboard lights.
Hey Jude, Is it me you are looking for?
Turn around Bright eyes, you attract me like no other.
Scaramouch Scaramouch will you do the fandango.

Texas company issues recall after Viagra-like ingredient discovered in its coffee

Bestherbs Coffee LLC has recalled all of its “New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional Herbs Coffee” after the FDA said it found traces of desmethyl carbodenafil in the product. The substance is similar to sildenafil, an ingredient found in Viagra, a commonly prescribed medication men take to treat erectile dysfunction disorder.

It was really good coffee so why is she pregnant?

I have quite a few international readers. I wonder how closely they follow news events in the USA.
I am always amazed by well informed these readers are. I know that most Americans have no clue about what is happening in the rest of the world, except for a few people in the news like Putin and Macron and places like Afghanistan and Iran.

We are getting prepared to travel to Europe this fall and are bracing for comments. We have bought t-shirts to wear.

Lately I haven't been posting political things. First, it depresses me. Secondly, I am preaching to the Choir.

What do you want to read in the journals?

Despite feeling quite tired, sleep proves elusive.

The night's real dark; I'm not sure what phase of the moon we're in or if it's just overcast. The temperature is quite comfortable, cooler than it is in my bedroom. We opened the window a couple of hours ago, but neglected the patio sliding door. Sans air conditioning, the bed felt both too warm & slightly damp from sweat. Not a recipe for good sleep. I gave up 15 minutes ago and came out here. Meanwhile, my husband is blissfully within the arms of Morpheus.

LJ got back late this afternoon. He'd been away since last Friday; off to an annual meeting, with all four of our godchildren in tow. He had five days of playing parent, while I spent my time trying to bring order out of chaos. While I did take a friend's invitation to lunch on Friday and had a memorial to go to on Sunday, I've been quite busy the remainder of the time.

I was desperate for a dresser. While I have ample closet space, both of my dressers remained at our old place, leaving me no place to put things like underwear, socks and sweaters. Further, T-shirts were hanging, taking up room in the closet they just didn't need to take up. I made the journey with a handcart to the old place, retrieving the smaller of the two dressers, a modern oak coffee table & a dining room chair inadvertently left behind. I would've preferred the mule chest, but the dresser will live in my walk-in closet, & there just wasn't room for the larger chest. That, plus the fact the mule chest simply will not fit in the back of the Prius, while the smaller dresser did. The mule chest will eventually make the journey here, likely to be in my craft space.

With the dresser in my closet I was able to sort through things like socks, underwear, t-shirts & tanks and decide what stays and what goes. This afternoon (well, I guess yesterday afternoon), 6 sizable boxes of old clothes went to the thrift store that supports the local hospice. I found a cache of ancient shirts that dated back to the late 1970s. They got packed when I moved to the West Coast after medical school, and never opened, given all the weight I gained while doing my residency. They were mediums & larges. I think there's a reasonable possibility I will once again get into larges, getting into a medium feels rather doubtful. I got rid of 2/3 of them & washed the remainder. They're sitting on the living room chair right now for my husband to take a look at. Many, if not most, should fit him and I've asked him to take what he wants, and I'll bring the rest to the thrift shop.

With the china hutch in the living/dining room, in the place where it's going to live, I've been unpacking all the things that go into it. The china, the crystal, the fancier serving pieces I've acquired of the years were all super well packed, & taking up a lot of space. I had hoped to have everything put away before my husband's return, but that was just not in the cards. I did make a huge dent in it however. New goal is to try and have it all the way by the weekend.

I did have numerous boxes of things that belonged in the china hutch, in various kitchen cabinets. That's no longer the case, so I have more space now in the kitchen to figure out how I'm going to use. I also now have a bunch more bubblewrap to use for shipping things that I successfully sell on eBay. Speaking of that, three more items shipped out today, but I await payments on another half dozen, three of which I suspect I'm going to wind up having to relist. However, putting stuff up on eBay is definitely working and I expect when all is said and done, I'll reclaim 3 to 4 grand out of things I know longer want or need. I'm already up to 800 bucks and only a fraction of what I ultimately want to dispose of, has been listed and sold.

All right, time to try and lie down again.

My friend Linda and I have been going for walks in the morning. I've been trying to get in a little better shape in advance of our planned trips this fall. I am worried that I will have trouble if I don't at least do some exercise.

OneHourOnTreadmill

Today we walked to the State Capitol Building which is about a half mile away. In total walk of 1.18 miles. Linda wanted to see how big the protest was on the steps. They were getting ready to protest Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos.

Time Capsule

Found: A Letter to the Future From 1995
The walls of a suburban house contained a secret missive.

This is the sort of thing I would do. In fact, I did. My time capsule was a little more extensive. I remodeled a hot tub in my apartment. I included a history of my ownership of the condominium with a few pictures. I also included a copy of the grocery ad from the week, a first class postage stamp, and the front page of the newspaper. That was back around 1996.

I took all those treasures and sealed them in a Tyvek envelope which is mostly waterproof, placed them in a shopping bag that I received from a shoe store because it had a string closure. I hung the parcel from the structures under the tub where it would be away from the damp floor. Who knows when it will be found.

The Music is still calling.

CNN has a "Throw Mama from the Train" moment with this headline.

Family of woman killed by Minneapolis police wants answers

The line is Throw Mama from the Train, a Kiss." It implies that you are throwing Mama and not the Kiss. English is a Word order language. Placement is important.

I saw the headline and read:

Family of woman killed by Minneapolis Police. "Wants answers" was lost somewhere in translation.

I went to the Bear's pool party on Saturday. It was a potluck with a lot of interesting people. One guy did something very unusual. He was Flag Dancing which I had not seen in a long time.

I was prevalent in the 1980s but by the 90s it was waning a wasn't done a lot.

I knew a guy in the late 80s that made his own fans for this purpose. I don't know how much is technique and how much is just flowing with the music.

An analogy

Jul. 16th, 2017 10:24 am
[personal profile] apparentparadox
I've been formulating this analogy in my mind lately. It still needs some work, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

An alcoholic regularly gets drunk and drives home. Most of the time, nothing happens. Occasionally, the drunk is involved in some kind of mishap that only affects their own property (dings to the car, dents to the mailbox, etc.) One night, the drunk hits another car, killing one adult and one child, leaving the remainder of the family alive but in emotional agony and financial ruin. After sobering up, the drunk tearfully exclaims "I didn't mean to hurt anyone" and begs for forgiveness.

This is how I feel about people who register & vote Republican or who attend churches who get involved in civil matters (such as whether same sex marriage should be recognized by the government). Sure, if you asked some of those people, they would say that they personally don't agree with the Republican party or their church on those things. But, to me, they are like the drunk who didn't plan to hurt anyone. They support (through their time, money, and presence) organizations that do harm to others.

Hmmm I think Fracker may not be the work he wanted. I am thinking of a word with a U in it.
